Can vinegar be used as antibacterial in carpet?

My old dog has a large growth with sores on her leg and I've been wrapping it only to find out it's been going thru the bandage and into my rug wherever she lays. I have a steam vac and wonder if using vinegar would have an antibacterial effect or if there's something else that won't be harmful to my family if I use it. The kids are always on the floor and I'm freaking out. Just read about flesh-eating virus and I'm really concerned about what may be in the carpet wherever she's been. Any ideas or suggestions? She stays out all day--only inside at night. Thanx!

Vinegar is not an antibacterial. Have you taken the dog to the vet to see about the sore and if it is infected? If no infection, I would think any good carpet cleaner would work. I use Ajax laundry detergent with bleach in my Hoover Steam Vac.
Works better than any cleaner I have found. Nice fresh scent, no foam.
