Not the smartest thing to do...but I lit a bunch of candles on our mantle on Christmas Eve, and one of them lit some greenery on fire, and by the time we got the fire out, it had burned the top of the mantle and had travelled about 2 feet up the wall. So, now I'm preparing to repair the damage, and I could use some advice. I'd say about a 6-inch area of the mantle's surface is charred - just on the top, and not very deep - but thankfully the wall (plaster) is in decent shape - just black with some burn bubbles. My plan of action is to sand the damaged part of the wall, fill in the divets left by the bubbles with some spackle, then prime and paint. For the mantel, I was going to scrape off all the paint in the affected area, scrape out the charred wood, and then fill in the charred wood area with some wood filler. Then sand, prime, and paint. Does this sound right? Any tips or advice on this?
