Good morning, Suzanne! It's warming up here already and still foggy. Glad you had a good weekend!

I've just baked 2 chocolate chess pies to take with me tomorrow, and very soon I need to get ready to go to my chiropractor appointment, then some shopping before heading to another town to donate double-reds at the blood center. My laundry is done, so after I finish wrapping a few more gifts to take with me, I'll be ready to pack and load my car this evening for an early departure in the morning. I haven't seen my oldest Dson and his wife in a while, so I'm excited. Also, her parents will be there, as well as my kids from Beaumont. I think we're going to have a lovely Thanksgiving week. I get to see my sister, maybe my nieces, and some cousins while up there, too.

Good weekend for us - our favorite football teams won (Ole Miss and the Saints!)

Anyone watch the AMA's last night? Kind of speechless, all I can say is, thank goodness for Keith Urban!

Hi Ohio Fem! I don't have a particularly large amount of space that isn't shaded. We put the plastic shed against the house when we first moved in, back when the property was all lawn. The previous owner sub-divided and sold the lot behind us. I look at that 1/4 acre of sun-drenched bliss nearly every day and shake my head. I got the buckets from the bakery dept in the local grocery store just to try out container tomatoes. Then I bought 2x10x10 boards and that was how they fit. I didn't give it much thought at the time since the seedings were teeny when they went in. I've decided to move the shed. That will give me an area about 10' x 10' for growing my tomatoes. I have to empty it and find a few strong guys to move it. I have a huge live oak in the shade, so we'll put it under the tree. I bought 32 resin pots last week and a pallet full of soil stuff. The white buckets will go along the cyclone fence and I'll use them for plum tomatoes for sauce. Thanks JoeOrganic. Prayers are always appreciated. I feel pretty good most days. My energy remains low so if I have an hour of steady work in the garden, it's a good day! When I move the shed and switch to the new pots I was planning to build a different sort of trellis system. I don't know why, but when they built this house they put the septic and leeching field behind the house. OTOH, the front lawn is HUGE and would have been a great place for the septic business. I figure they had to have been on drugs or something. It's FL! Everyone puts a pool behind the house! You can't dig in the soil where the shed sits, so I was going to put 2x2x10 in buckets and fill them with cement. Then I was going to attach 10 feet of 4x4" wire fencing to each end and grow tomatoes on either side with 8 pots per row. I'll have 4 rows of tomatoes with an aisle in between. That should take up the entire amount of tomato growing real estate I'll have in that spot. Plums will stay in the white buckets along the sunny fence area around the yard. THis is what I have so far: Cherokee Purple Floradade (developed specifically for FL by UF) Black Cherry Black Plum Amish Paste Tigerella Green Zebra San Marzano Mortgage Lifter Yellow Gooseberry I bought more seeds to start inside in Dec for the second half of the FL growing season: Sun Gold Berkeley Tie Dye Yellow Mortgage Lifter Dr Wyche's Yellow Pantano Romanesco Paul Robeson Black Krim Large Barred Boar Green Grape Jersey Giants Blue Berries Purple Bumble Bee Pink Bumble Bee I've been told that cherry and smaller variety tomatoes do better in the FL heat than large tomatoes. I had planted Beefsteak and Brandywine in the ground last spring thinking they would be fine to grow in the summer. I don't think I had a single tomato more than 1' around. Almost all of them split wide open from the daily monsoon rains. I guess that's why the growing season here is from Sept - June. The heat and constant rain here kills everything. The only thing that grew all summer was Okra. I did get n enormous amount of Roma tomatoes but they were very small and thick skinned. Thank you so much for your words of advice. I do have quite a few very small plants. When I started the seeds I had 100% germination, except for the yellow gooseberries. They didn't grow at all until I placed a few seeds on top of the soil in the bucket and kept them well watered. I had placed two plants in many of the buckets, thinking one might die. They didn't. After 4 weeks I pulled the second plant from each pot and put them in 1/2 gallon pots. The plants in the five gallon buckets started to take off and get bigger. The plants in the small pots will get transplanted into a bucket for the spring season. Hopefully they will have a head start over the seedlings I'll be starting soon. Like I've said, I really don't know what I'm doing. My Italian grandparents had a farm in upstate NY when was a kid and I spent every August there. We helped pick the tomatoes and spent days cooking, straining, making sauce and canning with grandma. My parents always had lots of tomatoes, swiss chard and peppers too. I can't call any of them for advice because they no longer walk among us, LOL. So it sounds like I'm hearing that I should trim the suckers if I want to have a few large variety tomatoes and leave the cherry and plums alone so that I have more production with the small varieties? Today was an awesome day. Bob got up early with me and we went out to pick up our order of Tangelos and on to the Mennonite Market... Did a little shopping and then back home again.. I sorted through some old coffee mugs and will be putting them in the spring yard sale for the Hope Fund at church..I know I will have tons more too. Christmas stuff especially.. I have waaaaay too much in the way of Christmas ornies.. I just keep the ones with sentimental value to them like some hand painted ornies my mom did and little gifts of ornies from a lot of really nice online friends I have met over the years.. Carolyn, It is so amazing when you can get more order in your life by purging what is just not working to the good in your life.... Hanging on to what is doing absolutely nothing but draining you either financially or physically or spiritually is not worth it... Kick it to the curb or give it away or sell it or donate it... but yeah.. don't let it drag you down.. sometimes things can act as an albatross around you neck..and will keep you from doing other things that really are worth while... besides, if you give it away or donate or so... then someone else may garner a really great blessing from it.. and guess what... your blessings will increase too..Just because you remove something from your life that is doing you no good, doesn't mean it doesn't have value.. to someone else it may be just fantastic.. It is turning cold for the next week, so walking will be brisk.. and not really long treks.. just a mile and a half.. and that's it.. toes get cold after that.. lol So ar this year I have walked every day.. and still watching my intake of calories.. so it's all good. Last 15 months: Dec 2003- Went ot Alaska for Christmas w/ my family, first time in 15 years. Wonderful. January 2004 - DH decided he needed to separate and went looking for a place of his own. I received emails, cards and support from my SS sisters and DH & I went to counseling and started some work. May 2004 - My yearly visit with my Kentucky family and MADDIE! Loved it and LOVE her. Spring 2004 - Exchanged a series of emails with DeeMarie and we learned a lot about each other. Very fun and lovely conversations. Beautiful person, she is. June 2004 - Surrendered my dog to keep my husband. Painful but necessary. Again, lots of support from here. Summer 2004 - Spent living in Alaska. Drove up and down the state and had a killer time. Loved it but was happy when I got home in the fall, then I got homesick for Alaska - lol. September 2004 - Went to NY and met Raeanne and her DH- visit too short and had TOO much fun! The people are so fantastic that we're thinking of moving to that coast in a few years! Scoping weather and property now. DH started 2nd year of law school - only 1 more to go after this. I started back to college to finish a degree I started many years ago. All children in school. Dec 2004 - Had DH's family here for holidays. So stressful, DH blew a gasket and almost left again. Back to counseling...and deal making. Lots better now that family's gone. January - Signed up for another college load; continuing to work toward that piece of paper I want. Becoming aware that time flies when you don't have any. Signed up at WW Core Program. Determined to lose weight and be healthy. Still here, after many years and still checking in really regularly. Planning a trip to east coast in March to scout a place to live when we finally move. KYSusie~ Good to hear from you. Keep on truckin' toward wellness. Good Saturday morning, everyone! It's sunny and warming up here to 79 this afternoon. I've been up and out to my church women's monthly meeting. Our guest speaker today spoke about her husband's death from breast cancer 5 years ago. He was diagnosed 20 years ago, and with chemo, he had 7 cancer-free years, then they found spots on his lungs, and with Tamoxifen (sp?) he had another 5 good years before it moved to his brain. I'd never thought about men having breast cancer before, but it accounts for 10% of the BC deaths these days. Donna, that's great that your construction is under way! I'd love to see progress pics. Suzanne, at least you're rained in with your hubby at home, right? It could always be worse. LOL Tikanis, I hope you find your perfect bike and new clothes. Have fun out in the garden, too! BJ, I'm sending you good vibes and comforting hugs. Please pass them on to your friends. How sad for everyone. We played canasta with our friends last night, and it was almost like old times. Lots of laughs, bad jokes, and ribbing about our playing. We've been erratic about playing since our friend Larry died, but I hope we get back to playing regularly because it's good for all of us to get together. I think that hubby and I are going sightseeing this afternoon. There's a town called Spring about an hour away from here, and their 'old town' is officially opened and dressed up beginning today for Christmas. I've never been there, so it will be fun to see it at its prettiest the first time. I'm always up for finding fun odds and ends for those little 'extras' at Christmas or even for birthday treats. Hubby has decided to join the church, so tomorrow is the big day. He's been waiting until all our friends could be in attendance to join, and it's taken 2 months to reach this day. He's already immersed in several volunteer things around there, so this is almost just a formality. I'm glad he came to this decision on his own without any pressure from me, too. Well, all weekend I have been gallantly fighting the EVIL Forces (who demand completed paperwork in exchange for a paycheck.) Swift sword (pen) in hand, complex armaments of battle (fax machine) nearby, trusty apprentice (DS) at my side, we have fearlessly taken the mountain (pile of paperwork) and conquered the DEMONS (billing deadlines) that threatened to destroy us (uh, slow the cash flow...)

Didn't I just buy a new bike??? Haven't had time to touch it. Short week with 5 days off, I am fearless! Ha ha!

Happy TURKEY Week!

I've been working from home and still got side-tracked by staff who saw me online. A girl can't get a break here!

We are heading to south Jersey for Thanksgiving with my family. Should be a nice time; hopefully the weather will cooperate. My MIL was not pleased; she told DH "why won't you spend Thanksgiving with us?". We live around the corner from DBIL and about 8 miles from her; DH sees her for dinner every Wednesday night. DH is actually quite happy to have a holiday or two with my family, as MIL can be a handful at times. ;-p

Had a doctor's appointment this afternoon, and he said I lost "a couple of pounds". WOW, that was a shock. I was convinced I had gained, but I'm trying to choose low fat and high fiber foods, so perhaps we are seeing small changes. That's good news.

Hi Guys!

Well, Monday brings another diet for me! I am SOOOO tired of my lack of willpower. Tired of being THIS size...trying to hang in there. whine, whine, whine...

Sounds like everyone is busy, BUSY!

I spent the weekend making a guest bedroom for my college DDs. Thanks heaven for power tools!!!! DDs arrived last night and they loved the room.

Things are so easy when they're here. Today, they are doing all the grocery shopping for the holiday and they are being prep-cooks for dinner tonight. LOVE THIS!

DH is gone from the office tomorrow so I'll get lots done.

Suzanne, I have been ordered to make an old family recipe: Greek stuffing, for T-day/ Dysfunctional Family Reunion. It has ground lamb, chestnuts, golden raisins and a cinnamon stick in it. That just doesn't sound like something I want IN the bird, so I am making it on the side. What do you think?

Well tonight is Pie night. My sister hosts an annual pie making party the Tues. before Thanksgiving and tonight is the night. I can hardly wait!

Tikanis, that is really unusual. I would not like it because I passionately dislike lamb. The cinnamon really gives it a middle eastern flair.

The only thing unusual with my family tradition is that I baste my turkey with beer and butter. My mother always did it and I love the extra something savory it gives the gravy. Growing up in the south our stuffing was always made of cornbread. That's about as unusual as we got! I still make dinner the way my mother did.

Tikanis and suzanne - I didn't know there was any other kind of dressing, other than cornbread! ha. Just teasing. It is the one I prefer, and my husband makes it (using his dad's recipe.)

Since we're going to join our friends in Florida at their condo, I'm not sure what we'll be eating, but we've made up some seafood gumbo to take for one of the meals. Tonight might be a good night to eat it, so we don't miss Dancing with the Stars and Biggest Loser. (I truly have to get a life!)

Have any of y'all gotten into the tummy slimming/slenderizing jeans/slacks? I had seen where someone (maybe on Oprah) said that one didn't need to spend mega bucks to get the same look. They suggested the Lee Slimming Secret and also Levi 512's. I purchased a black pair and a denim pair of the Levi 512's that were on sale for $34 at Dillard's and so far, love the way they look and feel. Nice and long, flattering. The true test will be after Thursday! Just something to pass along as we go through the holidays.

Happy Pie Night Tikanas!

Wodka, did not get slimming slacks yet but I hope they have them in my size. I wear a women's short size and not many stores offer them.

Dancing with the Stars........cannot wait. I'm leaving this office by 4pm so that I can get as much of the tree up as possible before I need to start dinner and settle in for the finale-finale. Wish that Kelly had performed a bit better. I though Mya was awful in her free-style, but the judges were very generous with her scores (as usual). They sooooo want her to win it all.

BJ, have a fun week with your girls.

Suzanne, we don't have family traditions anymore, but I miss my mom's stuffing. Can't make it because no one else likes it. She put raisins in her recipe, and it was so good. Maybe I'll make some for myself someday in her memory.

Need some help with buying small gifts for the little ones in DH's family. Eight of them; age range 1-to-7. Nothing big; less than $20 each. I want them to open something when I have my Open House on the 18th. Any help appreciated.

Hmmmmm...I make a rockin' sweet potato & creamy horseradish dish! Of course, CORNBREAD stuffing!

Kid gift ideas: Deck of cards, Teething toy (1 year old) in grocery baby section, 2 year old (something that makes noise in toy section in grocery store!), 3 & 4 year olds (slinkys), 5 & 6 year olds (drugstore tablet with colored pages and a small washable marker set), 7 year old (something different since they are the oldest!) like a small fuzzy poster to color (drugstore buy).

Tikanas: I don't know when I'll be in Cali again! The economy is so bad and we took a MAJOR bath on real estate and building a house. We're pretty broke right now!

Sounds like everyone is in the MOOD to EAT! lol!

Big News! Just would like to announce that we found out last night I am going to be a stepmother of the bride in June. YEAH!! DH's oldest came by to show us her ring. They are planning on a small affair in the dominican republic, then a friend/family party (not a $50,000 Jersey wedding---they want a house!) in late June. DH and I are thrilled.

Dee - Congratulations! How exciting, that will add to your list of things to be thankful for. I saw card games at Target that were reasonably priced - they even have a version of Monopoly. I bought a bunch to send to my nephew in Iraq, even though they are for kids. They get goofy out in the desert. I sent them a bunch of yo-yo's once. Or what about word find books?

BJ - I wasn't in the mood to eat until I read this thread yummers. Any progress with Baby V's adoptive family? Think of him often.

The most non-traditional thing we have are brussels sprouts that are bathed in oil/butter, garlic, and pancetta until the sprouts are lightly browned, then you add cream to the pan until it thickens. High in calories but so delicious.

Suzanne - I soak cheese cloth in wine and butter and drape over the turkey and then baste the turkey with the rest. It makes a wonderful gravy.

Besh - I also saw that Oprah episode, they should really gear it towards average America - I could never spend $200 on jeans - no matter how good they made me look - well if I looked that good, maybe.

Suzanne - I am anxious to get out of work so I can start preparing some dishes too.

BJ - I never heard of sweet potato and horseradish dish, sounds interesting.

Tikanis - I love the pie party, you do such cool things.

Good Thanksgiving eve, everybody! It's coolish and sunny and really looks nice and autumny (such a word?) here in north Texas today.

I've been out already to have my mammogram and do some shopping. I woke up with a sinus drainage and earache, so I needed some meds quickly. Also picked up a DVD of "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" since oldest Dson doesn't have his own copy, and I had just bought one for youngest Dson.

The most unusual thing we'll be having tomorrow for Thanksgiving is smoked pork shoulder instead of turkey. My oldest Dson and DDIL wanted to do something different.

Dee, congrats on the upcoming nuptials! Do you get to help plan things, or will you be enjoying everything without the stress?

Chocolate chess pie recipe: 1 square unsweetened chocolate, 1 cup sugar, 1 stick butter, 1 tsp. vanilla extract, 2 eggs, 1 9" frozen pie shell. Melt chocolate with butter, combine rest of ingredients and stir well. Pour into frozen pie shell, and bake at 325 for 30-35 mins, or until pie filling is solid, not shaky! Eat and enjoy!

Raeanne, and BJ, your dishes sound yummy. Raeanne, I am a huge fan of Brussels sprouts and will try your way with what I don't use tomorrow. I could make a meal of them.

I got out of work at 12:00 - took the time to have my nails and toes done at the local asian salon! It felt good. Came home and finished pies and cranberry sauce. Tomorrow I only have to make dressing, roast turkey, mash potatoes and bake squash! Voila!

Milkdud, yes, I am a native Floridian and my mother is from Oklahoma and grew up in Texas. My father is a cajun french man from Mississippi. Southern roots all around.

The Pie Party was wonderful. My sister has some wonderful friends and it was a lot of fun.

I have errands to run, cranberry sauce, deviled eggs and a cheesecake to make. I think this will be the BEST Thanksgiving ever!

Good Saturday all,

Hopefully, you are all stuffed with turkey and fixings! I know I am. Oink, oink, oink.

Yesterday was annual shopping day in Boston with DFIL and S'sIL. It was fun as always - lunch at Four Seasons and shopping at Saks. He is the most unique FIL in the world I think and I think he really enjoys taking his girls out for this day. Got home around 9pm and am so glad to be home again. Happy Saturday!

Suzanne, I was thinking about you yesterday when I saw the newscasts of crowds shopping on Fifth Avenue! Your FIL is indeed unique, and he's got to feel good about creating a tradition that you will fondly remember always.

Yesterday, I made over 100 mini Italian meatballs (my mom's recipe) with my Sunday gravy. They are packed away in the freezer, and right now I have a 4.5 pound pork roast in my crockpot that has been rubbed with Marcdi's recipe. I plan to "pull" that apart tonight and freeze that for the party on the 19th. Now, I'm off to make another 2-3 batches of cookie dough for the freezer. I've got no shopping finished, but the Open House plans and work, is well on it's way. Since the party for DH's family is on the 19th, I think I can feel what it's like to shop last-minute like most of the men in the world. LOL!!

Good to see you Besh! My DH's niece thinks we are buying a farm too! I need to change my status soon.

Hey Dee - I just made my pulled pork yesterday and had it for dinner. My niece and her 4 kids are visiting from South Carolina and we had that and some coleslaw for dinner. We are going to eat the left overs tomorrow while we watch the Steelers. Don't think there will be any left for me to freeze.
