Just 10 lbs. to go and it's tough!

I thought the beginning was tough, but now with just 10 more pounds to my goal, I am finding it very difficult to stay motivated. I feel wonderful, look great, and I'm having a ball buying new clothes. I am still being careful about what I eat but just can't seem to get myself to really work at getting the last bit off. Is anyone else struggling with this stage?

Congratulations! You are SO close! Keep pictures of the "old" you next to a pic of the "new" you on your fridge, next to the computer, and in the corner of your mirrors. Wear some of your new clothes in the "new you" pics.

Write in a little notebook everyday, of how proud you are of yourself, how these last few lbs are NOTHING compared to what you've already lost, how good you feel now, how fun it is to buy new clothes in smaller sizes!

Plan a big reward for yourself for when you reach goal weight!

Beef up your exercise routine to Zap your metabolism, maybe taking up something new; Yoga? Pilates? Swimming? train for a marathon/ bike- a- thon? Tennis lessons?

I think it is WONDERFUL that you have come this far. Keep checking in so that we can give you support. You are almost to the finish line!!

I have 3 plants, all suffered die-back much worse than in any previous winter since I planted them. One died right back to within inches of the ground, despite the deep snow cover. The other two suffered a lot of die-back, but in the end they still have a decent cane framework, and the new growth has flower buds, so they should fruit this year, maybe just lighter than in the previous few years. I would have thought this would be one of the best years for over-wintering Valiant grapes... not really sure what happened to make it otherwise. On the otherhand, the Chester Thornless blackberries that share the same trellis, made it through the winter with flying colours and are now threatening to out-hog the trellis...

Pole limas - 10-20 lbs per plant?

Ditto on the above comments - don't take that website as gospel. Given adequate space & fertile soil, the yield from pole limas can indeed be very high. But while the yield from a single coddled pole bean can be remarkable (I grew one pound of pole snap bean seed per plant last year) I can't see 10-20 pounds per plant as being feasible. Using 24" spacing between pole lima plants, I get somewhere around 4-5 pounds of shellies per plant, if the season is long enough for all pods to reach maturity. Assuming this estimate to be correct, that works out to about 1-2 pounds per row foot for pole limas. Yield can vary considerable, depending upon variety; "Sieva" (a.k.a. "Carolina") has been my highest yielder. Keep in mind, the yield advantage for pole beans vs. bush beans is row-for-row. For a single row, pole beans are clearly the winner; but for multiple rows, because of the wider row spacing required, much of this advantage is lost. You can fit more rows of bush limas into a given area than rows of pole limas, so if you have the space, it may not matter. Most of the larger-seeded varieties, however, are pole. I do concur with their recommendation for mulching, although their emphasis on one exact depth seems arbitrary. Mulching is good practice for any pole bean, once the seedlings have their first true leaf. By conserving moisture, it reduces blossom drop, which improves the yield. It also provides nutrients as it breaks down, and reduces disease problems caused by mud splash.

10lbs vs. 15lbs pressure in pressure canner - some questions

Pressure depends on your altitude. If you are above 1000 ft., and you have a weighted gauge canner, you need to use 15 lbs. If your altitude is below 1000 ft., and you use 15 lbs., your product will be fine, just a little more cooked. The time does not change with pressure canned foods,....just the pressure. Friction, loft, etc., are different. Encapsulated air has weight. Physics, indeed, is fun. So is slight of hand. I didn't see the boxer put the brown sugar in the bag, and had forgotten about it by the time I got home. It's one of these new flat packets, and snugged up against the 10 pounder, so didn't show through the heavy, opaque bag until I set it, with the white sugar bag upright, on the counter, and the brown started to slump.

I got on the scales this morning and I've lost 1 pound in the last 2 weeks. It seems to be taking so long now! But I have made up my mind to just get it off even if does seem to take forever. Now I feel I don't need to rush it. I feel good about myself. Do you know I have even gone down a 1/2 size in my shoes! My toes are thinner! LOL!

You are an inspiration to be that close. Thanks. I'm so far off, I can't imagine yet how that will feel. I bet an increase in activity would help. Maybe you can set aside some time, only temporarily until you get there to increase exercise/activity, maybe 50%?
