Atkins Diet

Has any one ever had success on the Atkins Diet? I just recently bought the New Atkins Diet Book, and I keep wondering how all the fat that you are supposed to eat on this diet can do you any good. I would like to lose some belly fat as I am not able to exercise like a person should. I need to lose about 20 pounds. Any suggestions??

The Atkins diet works like any other diet, by reducing the total number of calories you eat in a day. Since you are cutting out carbohydrates, which make up close to half the calories of most people's diet, you can eat a lot more fat and protein.

I haven't been on the Atkins diet. It's not for everybody, but some people seem to have success with it.

My suggestion would be to keep track of your calories and nutrition by signing up for an account on an online diet journal or download free diet software like CRON-O-Meter which you can get at http://spaz.ca/cronometer/ . For an online journal I like the USDA Mypyramidtracker web site. Fitday.com is another popular one.

Mystic, My husband and I use Atkins to control his TypeII diabetes and my insulin resistance. It does not reduce caloric intake; on the contrary, most people find that they take in more calories.

Atkins is NOT a NO carbohydrates way of eating - it's a LOW carbohydrates way of eating. Some systems in the body require carbs and cannot operate on stored fat - brain, eyes, heart.

Dietary fat (eaten fat) is not stored as fat. Everything we eat, to some extent is converted, simply speaking, to sugar (glucose, glycogen, all the words you've read over the years).

All (100%) of the carbohydrates you eat (starches, simple sugars, complex sugard) are converted to "sugar." Only 56% of proteins (meats, other) are converted to "sugar." Only 10% of your fat intake is converted to sugar.

If you take in more carbs (think of it like filling your car's gas tank) than your body burns (normal activity, exercise, everything you physically DO), the remaining carbs convert to fat in order to be stored.

Now, if you eat only a few carbs (never fewer than 15 grams of carbs per day; usually 15-20 to start), eat lots of fat (yes, all the bacon you want), and have steak, shrimp cocktail, some salad, allowed veggies...your body will be forced to burn stored bodyfat in order to give you the fuel it needs to do your normal life.

You do not have to exercise. I promise. I won't say that weightloss wouldn't be faster if you did, but many physically-impaired people can lose weight simply by increasing the fat and protein intake and reducing and being picky about the carbs you do eat.

Read the book, understand it, and follow it. It works.

While this is a great idea of checking on Google and planning your restaurant choices prior to leaving your home are great ideas. I recently read an article that about different types of diets. It actually mentioned about using a low carb diet, but not totally cutting out on all of your food for calorie count. Also here is a new diet plan that I found online, I have not tried it, but it reads like it will work out really well for anyone. I am pondering taking it on myself, but do not know yet. rosiequilts, I lost 50 pounds last year by calorie counting, which is just another way of saying "eating-loads-of-fruits-&-veggies-so-you-can-eat-the-most-food-with-the-fewest-calories". I learned to love vegetables! A pile of eggplant, onions, mushrooms & peppers with a little spaghetti sauce on just 2 oz. of pasta & 1/4 cup grated mozzarella is delicious & filling. Spaghetti squash can be substituted for the pasta (just put the spaghetti squash whole in a crock pot & it's done in 4-6 hours). For salads, I love to mix spinach, lettuce, diced raw green beans, carrots, celery, cherry tomatoes and use 1/3 cup dried cranberries for dressing, or sometimes green olives and a little of the olive juice in the jar. If fresh produce isn't on hand, then combining frozen veggies & cooking in the microwave is tasty: kale, lima beans & cauliflower, for example. Veggies in combination taste much better than just plain. In winter I enjoy turnip greens & squashes. Cabbage is a versatile veggie, good for filler in soups & stews, sauteed, microwaved, or sliced for low-fat cole slaw made with Splenda. For munchies, I love to microwave a tub of Brussels sprouts or cauliflower & keep it in the fridge for mindless snacking (you know, when you get those urges to eat but you're not really hungry). A little butter or oil won't hurt you and, in fact, makes the vegetables more nutritious. Your body absorbs the nutrients better when a little fat is present with the veggies. Sometimes I like to make a green sauce of chopped fresh spinach & French parsley in a little cream & parmesan cheese, heated in a sauce pot. I serve this over a big plate of broccoli & cauliflower, and it's delicious. There are so few calories in the veggies that you can afford to indulge in the cream sauce. But then, that's dinner -- no bread, no side dishes, no heavy meats. Anyway, didn't mean to hijack this thread. Just wanted to pass on some good veggie food ideas. When you walk through the cookie/cracker aisle with indifference, but your mouth starts watering when you get to the produce section, you know you've made a good change!

Sisto, you need to work with your doctor to set your own goals. Everyone is different. What is ok for one person might not be for another. That said, and just for the sake of conversation, as a pre-diabetic on no medication, here are the goals which my doctor set for me. Waking up (fasting level) 85-110 mg/dl Before meals (4 hours) 90-120 mg/dl 2 hours after meals less than 130 mg/dl My problem is hunger and pickiness as to foods I like. I eat quite a bit of peanut butter (6 carbs per 2T--watch out some has added sugar) and nuts which are high in fat and have carbs too, but I don't have a weight problem. Wheat Thins/Nabisco makes a flatbread which is 12 carbs for 2 crackers which I can melt some cheese on, making a good snack. Half and apple, glass of milk makes a good snack. Eating out, make a good choice, and if it's not a good choice, only eat half, take the other half home for another meal. Besides carb count, quantity eaten is important too. When half a croissant might be ok, a whole one might be over the edge. Sandwich, just eat half. I make soup and stew and use a small amount of barley for the carb part of the recipe. I don't miss pasta, potatoes, rice, and I do eat 1-2 pieces bread daily. I miss the quantity of fruit I used to eat. I miss the big 8 oz. glass of milk at dinner, which I can have but then something else has to go. I fail when the family goes out for frozen yogurt, because I have some too. I failed the other evening when the family ordered delivered pizza, but most of the time I do pretty good. We'll find out for sure when I have the next a1c test. Sorry to ramble on, but it feels good to share with people who are "in the same boat."
