Dieting - 1940

My dad found a home medical advice book that was published in 1940.

There is a section entitled "How to Reduce". It contains a diet called the "Hollywood Diet". (I can't believe the name - it sure does not sound like it is from 65 years ago).

It starts with this advice:
For those who do not wish to bother with calories, this diet is suggested, but it does not agree with everybody and MANY PHYSICIANS DISAPPROVE OF IT. On the other hand a number of persons have been benefited by its use and it can be tried and dropped if found undesirable or too strenuous.

Here is Day 1, if anyone wants to try it!!!
Breakfast: 1/2 grapefruit, cofee. (Breakfast same every day.)
Luncheon: 1/2 grapefruilt, 1 egg, 6 slices cucumber, 1 slice Melba toast, tea or coffee.
Dinner: 2 eggs, 1 tomato, 1/2 head lettuce, 1/2 grapefruit, coffee.

Didja make it thru day 1 ok? Want day 2? Remember, breakfast is the same!
Luncheon: 1 orange, 1 egg, lettuce, 1 slice Melba toast, tea.
Dinner: Broiled steak, 1/2 lettuce, 1 tomato, 1/2 grapefruit, tea or coffee.

Actually, caffeine is a common thread through all the diet types they list in the book!!!

(Just for fun, here are key advice items for pregnancy:)
Tip 16: Simple housework is beneficial, but overwork, excitement and worry should be avoided.
Tip 21: Remain in bed for at least 10 days after the baby's birth.

SUUUUUREEE!!!! I DID THAT!!!!!

Anyway, just a little fun reading from the Good Ol' Days.

Sounds kind of like the more recent Grapefruit Diet doesn't it? Thanks for posting--interesting.

It's really restrictive isn't it. Looks like the calorie count is really low.

Thanks - that's cute. They did not worry about cholesterol then either - lots of eggs there and a hunk of steak. Grapefruit would have been a luxury then. I remember mom saying they only had citrus fruit at Christmas time.

That's pretty funny. You'd be buzzing around so much from the coffee, you might forget to eat! --- not!

Thanks for sharing!
