food scales

Anybody use them? I'd like to get one to measure meats, potatoes, large fruits, and other things that don't fit in measuring cups. Besides, I just read where Lance Armstrong weighs & measures everything he eats (at least when he was in training). Well, if he can do it, so can I.

In another forum, most use the digital scales with flat tops so they can weigh their food on their plates. But I'm drawn to this one because it fits my kitchen decor! Salter mechanical high dial scale Any good reason not to buy it? Thanks for any and all tips.

I am looking for a good kitchen scale myself. I like the look of that one, too. Thank you for posting the link. I don't know of any drawbacks. I believe I'll buy this one if no one posts any negatives.

Thanks for the response, Tikanas. The other kind of scale is this: digital scale. I guess the advantage is you can set your plate on it, adjust ("tare") the weight to zero, then add, say, 3 oz. of meat on the plate. It might be more convenient, but the mechanical scale looks so cool. I wonder if the bowl is removable in the mechanical one? If so, you can also weigh food on your plate. But you'd have to do the arithmetic in your head (fine by me). Others might prefer a digital calculator to do their math.

Well come on now, kathy & marci_pa, what are the brands and how much did you pay for them? No fair posting without details!

Mine is a Salter that I got at Linen's and Things for $29.95 with a 20% off coupon. It's a small one and can be easily put away and out of sight. Since I have limited counter space, that was important to me.

I like the look of the mechanical scale, but it wouldn't have worked for me.

First post here, but wanted to tell you that I just got a digital scale that is very cool. It's an Escali Cibo. It measures weight in oz, lbs, g, or kg. Also tells you cals, carbs, sodium, protein, fat, chol, and fiber of tons of food. It has a feature where you can measure an empty container, press a button, then put your food in the container and it will tell you the weight of just the food, not the container. I bought mine on the internet (can't remember which site). You can just search for the brand and look for the best deal.
