| I'm 74, 5'6" ,weigh 170 pounds and am having problems with my Knees and last week slipped and broke an ankle bone.
I really think it is important to try to lose 30 pounds. My weakness is sweets. We have had a lot of stress the last several months and sweets are a security blanket and a very bad addiction. I talked to my Dr. recently and asked him if he had any suggestions or plans that he favoured. He didn't but said that some people find that a high protein diet with a few specified hours a week, i.e. Thursdays from 2 to 5 ) that you allow yourself to eat all the sweets you can possibly eat, sometimes is the answer. His thought is that you eat so many in a short period, that it totally sickens you. Does this make any sense and if so what proteins can one eat that would not contain a lot of bad fats for cholesteral? Would this include any fruits and veggies or not, as a lot of the veggies are high in carbs? Any suggestions. Right now trying to get around with this big boot is very difficult with the weak knee problem. I don't want to cause them any more strain than possible. thanks ivamae |

Since the doctor was the one who told you about this I would check with him on protein, etc. You might also ask him what he thinks of the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet by Drs. Rachel and Richard Heller. I haven't tried the plan so can't tell you much about it but a Google search should bring you some info. I think at the evening meal you can eat anything you want as long as it is consumed within an hours time.

I had an overweight coworker whose doctor told him he could eat anything he wanted --- as long as he ate it in under one hour. So he'd sit there and eat a whole pumpkin pie. I'm serious! But after a while he decided that this was no way to lose weight. I believe the old adage, everything in moderation. I also believe that you cannot change to a lifestyle of eating healthy if you totally cut out all indulgences. After dinner, eat a sensible sweet for dessert, as a reward for eating a well-balanced meal. During candy seasons like Valentines and Halloween, have a chocolate or two if you like. But don't put the whole bag in front of you (that's my downfall - making myself stop). Select a couple of chocolates for your treat that day! It's better to have one or two, than to never treat yourself at all. Remember, the healthy eating lifestyle you choose is something you really have to do for life, in order to maintain and stay healthy and well. So eat your health foods, but sprinkle in your favorite treat from time to time!

I've been on the Carbohydrate Addict's Plan that Suzy mentioned. The evening meal is a salad, then equal portions of protein, craving reducing vegetable and your regular carb (bread, potato, sweets). If you want more of the bread then you have to eat additional equal portions of the protein and vegetable. I did well on this diet, lost about 20 lbs in 6 months. I found weight loss slow (about a lb. a week) and I did plateau early - but it was a very easy plan to do since you always look forward to that last meal where you can work in desserts or your other favorite carb.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I appreciate your responses. I'm still undecided. I'm wondering what would happen if I ate a healthy balanced diet, used a smaller plate and tried to just cut back on everything consideralbly. I know if my plate appears full, it doesn't seem so bad. I did that once with success, many years ago. I've also been on a high protien diet and lost a lot quickly, that way but didn't keep it off - some of it , yes, but not enough. Broken ankle is stopping me from walking etc. ivamae

If youare really serious consider Weight Watchers. The weekly weigh in keeps you honest & the support & help from the group is a big plus. I really wonder about your doctor's advice. I think I could undo weeks of dieting in an hour of sweets.

I'm new here, I am a diabetic, have had 2 stents, have high blood pressure. I just had my 65th birthday, am 5'6" and I weighed 185 pounds. Jan the 1st, I started the South Beach Diet, I stayed on it for the month of January. After that I have stayed away from sugar, fried foods, pasta, bread and potatoes. I have lost 22lbs. I've gone from a size 18 to a 12. The South Beach Diet helps get rid of the cravings for sugar and carbs. I don't get hungry any more like I used to, I don't crave sweets and carbs. We eat out a great deal but I stay away from the fried foods. I eat fish either poached or dry grilled or chicken, sometimes I even have a very lean small fillet. If I eat bread, I take only a small piece. I don't really have a goal, other than to try and get It takes a lot of will power to get started and to stay My heart goes out to anyone who is trying to lose weight.

Good job Janis, continued success on getting off the meds. That is my main goal as well. Bev/Missouri

Good luck to you too. I'm seeing my cardiologist in the morning, it will be interesting to see his reaction when he walks in. I won't know about the results of the tests til next week. Jan

Susy, yesterday after I had all the blood tests, my doctor and I were discussing all the things I had been doing and there was a knock on the door. The doctor opened it and the nurse handed him the results of my tests. She said " Jan is going to be happy with these". I was floored, everything had greatly improved. I went by the Diabetes docor's office, he took me off one To everone who is dieting right now, don't give up, keep Jan :-) :-) :-)

Ivamae, I can tell you I was majorly addicted to sweets for most of my life. Ten years ago, in menopause, with my weight at an all-time high and my triglycerides through the roof, I decided to treat my sugar addiction like any other addiction, and give up sweets completely. I also gave up bread and other starches. I was in a truly rotten mood for weeks, but I eventually lost my craving for them. I lost weight and kept it off, and the only time my cravings return is if I indulge in something like bread at a restaurant. I've stayed completely away from sugar all this time. Honestly, I don't think much of the doctor's advice. I know it would trigger cravings in me. Susan

I think what your doctor says is good advice, if you feel you must have sweets. When I started to lose weight I thought "I can't be on a diet every day -- I'll never do it!" So I allowed myself to go off it on the weekends. I indulged, but the need to do so decreased over time. What I find happens is that what you do most of the time week after week prevails and contributes increased balance so in time you won't even care about the sweets! I'm actually impressed that your doctor's advice works with your weakness instead of being like my doctor and expecting a "lifestyle change" overnight. I believe in planning to indulge over doing it on a whim. I am an addictive person with an addictive personality and I found this has worked very well for me. Good luck!!

Janis Congratulations! You've done very well. I followed a change in eating habits very similar to what you have done. Cut out sugar, bread, potatoes and most high carb foods. I have lost 42 lb. and am now off my BP meds that I had taken for 6 years. I too hate pills and it feels wonderful not to have to take them. Best of luck to you that your success continues and you get off your meds too!
