What is a serving

Posted by sneakyplant (My Page) on

DM read that 1/3cup of blueberries was a serving and good for her heart. On the actual packing of blueberries it reads that 3/4cup are a serving. On the CDC website it says 1cup is a serving.

Where can I find the truth about what makes up a serving of blueberries and other fruits?

-Thanks! sneaky

RE: What is a serving

I've always thought of a serving of fruit as:

A medium sized piece of fruit is the size of a baseball, so any fruit that size or half a banana, papaya, 1/8 of a melon, 1/2 a grapefruit, etc.

Fruit juice serving size is 3/4 cup, but it's always better to eat the fruit instead, for the fiber and fullness it provides. 100% fruit juice is better for you then pop, but it's nearly like a sugar IV as it travels through your body; it works pretty fast!

Chopped, cut up, or crushed (like apple sauce) fruit serving is 1/2 cup generally.

These are GENERALLY ACCEPTED serving sizes. You have to apply some common sense and averages to whatever you eat.

Berry serving sizes vary a lot because of the size of the berries, but berries are a great source of fiber!
