My mom has made this for the holidays and it turned out really good.

Pumpkin Surprise

CRUST:
1 box yellow cake mix
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 egg, slightly beaten

FILLING:
2 cups pumpkin
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
2-1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
2/3 cup millk

TOPPING:
1/4 cup white sugar
1 cup reserved cake mix
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 cup butter, melted

Mix crust ingredients and press into 9x13 pan.

Mix filling ingredients and put on top of crust.

Mix topping and spread over filling.

Bake at 350° 40-50 minutes or until knife inserted into center comes out clean.

Is the pumpkin the canned kind, like pumpkin pie filling?

Ginger, probably not since the recipe also calls for the addition of pumpkin pie spice and brown sugar.

Just found this and noticed my confusing answer last year....

Yes, Ginger, it is canned pumpkin but NOT pumpkin pie filling. There is a difference.
