I'm NOT a cake decorator, BUT I can paint! I'm a fine art artist. There is a contest at a local winery to celebrate their 3rd year, and I'd like to join! I have a delicious sheet cake and it uses cream cheese frosting. What do I do to prepare the surface for painting? what do I use to paint with? Any way to seal it so the paint doesn't slip?
I'm thinking bunches of grapes around the sides, a wine bottle with their logo on the top, and of course "Congrats on your 3rd Year!!"

RE: LOOKING for: What to use to paint on frosting?
I also am not a cake decorator...nor a painter...but I am "inventive"...or maybe just resourceful? I would frost with the cream cheese frosting, let it dry a bit so it "crusts" a bit....then paint with a sugar glaze....just powdered sugar and water mixed to be like cream....my thought is to seal in the fats in the cream cheese, then when that has dried, just get paste food colors and mix with water and paint....being careful not to let the underlying glaze get too wet....or at least drying it out before continuing...sort of like fresco!
