Can I get away with lower height than recommended for chandelier

I just realized that the light fixture I bought is too tall and its height is not alterable at home. The item has already shipped.

The current height would have the fixture sit at 26" above my dining room table.

My question is: Is it worth it to open the box to see if 26" above the table will work? Or should I send it back right away?

The issue is that I'm in Canada, and to save on shipping, I have had the item shipped to a US border town, where I'll be picking it up in my car. I could send the chandelier back immediately from the border town and save on return shipping.
