After getting what you can off, prime with Gardz. It's made for going over adhesive residue. It won't reactivate it.

You might try mineral spirits. We use that on all sticky things.

Did you try sanding? We always sand lightly before painting and it doesn't harm the drywall at all.

Another vote for Gardz. Have used it with success for many years. Have never had any glue come through. Beats scrubbing:)

Using a mixture of fabric softener and water might work....it takes off wallpaper very easily so it might work on residue as well.

Rubbing alcohol also works on removing adhesive...
