If possible - be sure your builder is leaving room on either side of the window for drapery treatments. Also, make sure the windows/trim is deep enough for inside mount blinds/shutters etc.
I would also watch length so that you can buy standard drapes, 84, 95, 108 lengths.
I suggest this because I wasn't watchful and almost all my windows need custom treatments! Even my bedroom windows are a PITA. I can't use 95 and 108 is waaay too long, so if I buy ready mades I have to pay to get them hemmed!
I have faux blinds in my last house and never had a problem, also have faux shutters in my new house and they are fine. I did go with a reputable company - so they are nice quality even though they are faux. Faux may even hold up better due to the coatings they put on them.

What do most do with the sliding glass door or when multiple windows are together? Drapes, blinds, etc...

Have you looked at the window treatment ideas thread? I really like the look of the horizontal duettes for the sliders, but I imagine they are not cheap.

Roman shades would work whether of fabric or not. But if you get the wood or faux wood, be sure to check them for privacy...they should be lined. Otherwise, they won't be private at all.

You can also do drapes on traverse rods so they can easily be drawn closed at night.

You could do duettes or roller shades under a valance or valance with side panels to hide the shade during the daytime.

You may just want to get inexpensive temporary solutions until you are ready decorate the rooms in earnest as you don't want to be locked into something expensive that you may later be sorry you got.
