Any musicians out there, who decorate with musical instruments?

Posted by rjinga (My Page) on

I'm looking at this trumpet tomorrow, I dont know what it is about it, but I'm drawn to it and it's like dirt cheap. (online yardsale site)

Does anyone have any ideas for how to display this? and is there anything special about it? other than just being old/quaint.

This brings back memories for me, I use to play the trumpet and had a silver one kind of like this one. Not that your buying it to play, but it looks like it has a stuck valve (probably because no one oiled it in a while). It also looks like it's missing a ring slider on one of the bottom valves. It's where your left ring finger slips in to hold the trumpet. Sliver is a more unusual color than the gold for trumpets.

I don't know anything about the company, but you can look up that info online.

It might be an interesting decorative piece. You can display it any way you want, if it was in a studio it might be on a stand with the horn down and the mouth piece up towards the ceiling.

I have a clarinet made into a lamp....you could do that with the trumpet.

Here is a link that might be useful: here are some ideas

It was probably one of those completely unnecessary purchases. $5 was the damage..lol, it would be interesting to find out if it has any value (clearly not as is, but maybe if restored)?

you never know. it is very old and it is silver and it is missing the part you mentioned above.

Or it might get lost in my garage empire and when I croak, someone else will discover it and think they really have something :)

This one would be a great "intervention" candidate.

My father played the trumpet in his high school band. My mother made it into a lamp for his study. She had the mute (a cone shaped piece) mounted on a base. The wire ran through an upright rod at the back of the base to the socket. The trumpet was merely placed vertically on the mute. The way Mom did it, the trump could always be taken off the base and played (never happened, but it could have).

I have my Aunt's clarinet (she played in the HS band in the early 40's). I have it propped across a side chair next to an antique brass music stand and my piano. Just sort of a fun piece with a little family history!!

The brand is pronounced "Kwee-non" and they were a huge manufacturer of brass instruments in France for the first half of the 20th century. Your horn is ca. 1950-1965 I would say, as pre-1950 they did not have serial numbers and it looks to have the original case, which would be of 50s-60s vintage. It is silver-plated brass and looks to be in decent shape. I think roobear is correct about the stuck valve. But it probably wouldn't take a lot to get it playing again.

As for how to display, I couldn't tell you. In this house we just play 'em, we don't dis-play 'em. If you have a piano, maybe propped on that. Or on a side table on top of some sheet music.

I have seen custom lamps of musical instruments, and they look awesome.

We have a guitar on our home office wall. I don't have a pic, but we found wall hooks at a local music store. You can also order online, but some of these can be quite pricey if you want to get something like a case to hang on the wall.

I like the idea of displaying (French horn, filled with greenery?) but not converting into a lamp. Seems kitschy to me.

ya, I think the lamp idea is the more commonplace one, but I dont see that really fitting it with the decor I have, I do however see it somehow displayed maybe IN it's old case, on top of other old suitcases in a corner somewhere, the greenery idea would work too. thanks for the ideas.

I think I will also look into what it would take to restore it. Could perhaps have more value that way? In case I dont end up with a place for it :)

My husband actually owns a side business buying, restoring, and selling trumpets. He and our oldest son both play. We have a trumpet lamp and a baritone lamp.

He says restoring it would probably not be worth it because that trumpet is not very marketable. Too bad it is not a flugelhorn, DH says the Quesnon flugelhorns from the 20's through the 50's are worth $800-$900.

Is it a cornet or a trumpet?

How about a very large photo clip? :P

Not sure about the trumpet, but we have a couple of DH's guitars hung on the wall. Music stores sell the hangers. If you are looking hang it, I would check out your local music store, as they would have some ideas worth exploring.

25 years ago I collected brass horns and hung them on a wall over my couch. Everyone loved them! They looked great. Anyway, I used welding rods and cut them to length and stuck them in the wall. They were very strong and could be cut to the exact length to hold the instruments very stable. And so thin they weren't even noticed.
