CL Rug - Advice

Posted by newhomebuilder (My Page) on

What do you think of these rugs and the prices? Mostly interested in the larger one. What would it cost new?

Gorgeous Wool oriental rugs. In great condition. Larger rug is approx. 8' x 12', priced to sell at $200. I also have a smaller size, 6' x 8', for $150.00
These rugs are very traditional, the colors are vibrant and both are in excellent condition.

Is this one similar? It's twice as much...

Here is a link that might be useful: Heritage Bakhtiari Rug

Funny, I've been over at Overstock, too!

That's a prettier rug than the CL rug.

On another post, I just said how much I like a red and blue combo.

Those rugs look very nice. It was impressive that the Overstock reviews said that they didn't shed, which is unusual for a hand-tufted rug.

Don't think you could go wrong, either way. You could see the CL IRL or, if you want new, have those great ratings on Overstock to fall back on.

The rug says Belgium Wool, not hand-tufted. Are they one in the same? I have a wool rug now, and it did shed for a very long time, but only when vacuumed, not when just walking on it. I thought that hand-tufted were the type rug that you do not want because they gave off gassing. Am I confused?

I am frustrated, because the listing is still active, but I have not heard from the seller after sending an email and then leaving a phone message. :(

Heard back from the seller. She goes to my church, and I recognize her photo from the church directory, but don't know her! lol She says the rug is around 35 years old, but is machine made. It does not have a cotton backing like my wool rug. A friend of hers inherited it from a great aunt and sold the rug to the seller because she didn't like red. The seller is downsizing.

I hesitate to offer less for the rug since I could be seeing her around. After this information, what do you think the rug is worth?

RE: CL Rug - Advice

I think the approach you can take (to offer her less than she's asking if that is what you want to do).. without appearing too aggresive, is to tell her that you are really torn between buying NEW rugs at a similiar price (she doesn't know where you plan to buy them) and her rugs. IF she would sell her rugs together for say $300 (and they really are a good quality rug as it states AND IRL in good shape without obvious signs of their age) then that would seem like a reasonable price. 35 years is a LOT of feet/shoes/dogs/dirt/water/spills/cleaning, lots of general wear and tear unless they were in rooms where they got little foot traffic, but even so, they could be faded more than when they were new. So offering less, I dont think is out of line at all. I guess you offer what you are willing to pay. IF she is willing to accept that is up to her. IF she does not want to sell for less, tell you you completely understand, smile and tell her you look forward to seeing her in church next week :)

RE: CL another thing

PS: for me, the fact she goes to your church or even if she were a distant neighbor, would NOT stop me from offering a lower price. I would only buy for a price I was comfortable with. chances are she probably paid less for them then what she is selling them for, since people always expect people to offer less than what an item is priced at. Unless it's already clearly at a low low price.

Thank you! One other thing, I asked her about pet stains, and she said that she never had indoor pets, and said the rugs are in excellent condition. Fringe is also in tack (I hate fringe lol). it's hard to tell from the photos, but the rug does look like it has vibrant color and no fading.

DH and I are going to see them after dinner. I looked on eBay and the Belgium wool rugs of the larger size, are listed (but not selling) for around $200-$275. This could possibly be where they got the pricing from.

RE: CL Rug - Advice

If they are wool, that is a good price, I think, even considering they are machine made. I, too, would offer $300 for both. She will probably accept that. Wool rugs will hold up very well. Wool rugs that are hand-made can be either hand-knotted (the best) or hand-tufted.

RE: CL Rug - Advice

We really don't need both, although both would be nice for our bonus room. If we were to get both, we would have to offer $250. Planning on offering $150 for the larger one. As far as I know, no one has looked at them yet, and the listing is over a day old. Normally, "deals" don't last long.

Nothing wrong with having a machine-made rug.

Karastans have been very popular. They're machine-made.

RE: CL Rug - Advice

Thanks for all the help. I went to see the rug. It was not what I was expecting. Very thin, but not thin like a true antique Oriental (the kinds that my grandmother left to my parents.)

The worse thing was the smell! The rug had been stored for quite awhile in a basement, and then a garage. Had a cross between musty, mildew and a cleaning chemical (the rug had been cleaned 5 years earlier.)

Also, I was afraid of silverfish. I've been itchy ever since I inspected the rug. I didn't see any way that we could get that musty smell out. In addition, the rug was more of a rusty red that I don't think would have matched my bonus room sofa.

How disappointing. :( It looked like it had all your colors.
