Ledgestone fireplace - mantel?

Posted by dfzmom (My Page) on

We covered our 70's brick fireplace with ledgestone. We are working on the mantel now. Will be painted white to match crown in the room. Do you think a mantel with dentil moulding detail will look out of place with the rustic ledestone? I couldn't find any pictures. Thanks for any suggestions!

Please excuse the mess & dust. We are still working on staining the grout & cleaning it up. Looks a lot better in person.

Picture this mantel beefier & painted white.

Thanks again!

I wish there was a FP mantel board, there's been a few topics on them. The FP board is mostly technical.

But...I think it would look great! But I'm not sure about painting it white. Any type of stone, whether ledgestone or real stone, IMO only, doesn't jive with white wood. It's probably just me, but it looks off for some reason.

I'd go for a dark stain, or the color in the pictures. Beautiful FP!

To me, the mantel style you have pictures does not go with the type of stone you used. The mantel seems more formal and the fireplace very rustic. The way I have seen most stone fireplaces, including the one we had when I was a child, is with a slab of stone for a mantel or a more rustic natural-colored wood mantel.

I'm not loving it...
Too refined. And yes - too white...

Something simple -- large and substantial, in stained wood or stone (what about a simple limestone slab?) is what the ledgestone wants.

Dfzmom, beautiful fireplace! I agree that white might not be the best complement for the stone.

Oakley, I can't help but smile at the irony. ;)

Here is a link that might be useful: few pics of ledgestone fireplaces with stained mantels

FWIW, it would look sort of like this:

Mantle does seem to 'fancy' for the ledgestone IMO.

No dentil, slab of stone or chunky wood.

Love the ledgestone.

I don't think the two styles go together. Look at the link provided - that second picture looks GREAT! I believe this is what many people were trying to get across to Oakley.

I agree with a dark color on the mantle also.

Beautiful job with the stone!

Oh Natal, you just can't help yourself, can you? ;)

If I told her to demolish her whole room, then you'd have a point.

Love the link of pictures you put up though. Beautiful FP's and mantels!

I agree with the people that like a nice hunk of stained wood to make your stone fireplace 'shine.' No dentil molding though, too fancy...I think it sends a mixed message.
Lovely fireplace, enjoy it.

I think wood would look better!

I think ledgestone calls for something a little more simple/organic looking. I'm partial to the single "big block" of stained wood - here's my ledgestone fireplace (ignore the chair that doesn't "go" - it's temporary until I find a couple of chairs I like)

What a very cool room, mom2reese.

I could really cozy up in there (and in that chair). :)

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. I think you all are right, more rustic chunky look with stained wood. I should have went with my gut instead of letting the carpenter talk me into the dentil moldling. I like these two. Any opinions? If someone could photoshop these that would be aweseome! Thanks again.

Just bumping this up in hopes of more reponses. Need to make a decision early this week. TIA!

Are you going to put stone above the mantel as in the two pictures? I think the first picture has a more cohesive look between stone and wood. The second one is tending in the direction of the fancier mantel that you wanted. But it isn't painted (which I agree will not work) and the oak is still a bit rustic even if the details are not. What I like so much about the first one is the way the mantel and its supports are echoed in the dark open space on top and to each side of the firewood in the firebox. Somehow it speaks to me. You might decide on the mantel based on how formal the other elements in the room are.

Love the first one!

Love the first one, too.

The stone is stopping where it is. We didn't feel the room was grand enough to support a full floor to ceiling fireplace. It's a casual family room with 10 foot ceilings. Doesn't get much light, just one sliding glass door & open to the kitchen. Tan microfiber sectional couches and leather ottoman. The guy who is making it also said it's too late to add the supports like in the first one. Do you still think the first one would look ok without the supports? Thanks!

RE: Ledgestone fireplace - mantel?

Out of the two fireplaces you posted, I like the first one better too, and I also like it better without the supports (which sounds like it would work out well for you!).

 o
RE: Ledgestone fireplace - mantel?

I actually prefer it without the supports, too.

 o
RE: Ledgestone fireplace - mantel?

Yes, without supports would be fine. Our mantle has no supports.
Don't know what your furniture looks like, but I do prefer
darker stained mantles with stone(like the first photo)
Our furniture in our family room is a medium stained QS oak, but our mantle is black walnut. First we made a mantle in medium stained oak, then changed it to Black walnut, it was a major improvement. Our mantle is plain like the first photo, only it's about 3 1/4 " high and about 9" wide... The mantle in the first photo looks about 4"...Do a mock up with some wood to see how deep and how high you want it. If you don't have wood, use construction paper and tape...

 o
RE: Ledgestone fireplace - mantel?

First one and I agree that it will look fine without the supports. Can't wait to see finished pics!
