CL Purchase and Question

Posted by walnutcreek (My Page) on

I just purchased two large Bergere chairs plus an ottoman to match from a Craigslist notice. Camera has a dead battery right now, so can't post pictures. The chairs have loose back pillows and T-cushions and arm upholstery elongated ovals (I don't know what they are called) and welting/piping. I have fabric that I wanted to cover two Bergere chairs in, but am now wondering if I purchased enough (the chairs are much larger than I thought they would be and I love them). The fabric is a stripe with a total 40.75" repeat (V&H).

Does anyone have an idea of how much fabric I will need for the two chairs and large ottoman, please.

RE: CL Purchase and Question

It really isn't something that is easy to estimate because it depends on the construction/size of the chairs. The great news is that you could always do the ottoman in a coordinating fabric or even, break up the chair by doing, say the cushion, in a different fabric.

Can't wait to see pics of your find! CL has been a dud for me lately so I will have to live vicariously through everyone else's treasure hunts.

I've found this chart to be quite accurate, but it does not allow for matching a pattern. A stripe with a wide repeat, is that what you mean? It's not a little pinstripe pattern then?

great chart nicole, do you have any idea how much fabric an ottoman would need?

RE: yardage

rjinga.....yes. My rough guess on ottomans goes like this: measure the width and sides. An ottoman can be tiny or HUGE. Then if it's say 30" wide by 30" deep by 4" thick(one pad)....a yard and a quarter(matching piping can gerarally come out of the left overs from the chairs). Some ottomans have a double front....add another 6". I've never seen a fabric with a 40" repeat on a stripe???? That part is confusing me.

so, is your battery charged yet?? lol I want to see!

RE: CL Purchase and Question

Battery charger still showing red, so not charged yet. LOL.

I have added a link below (hope it works) to show the fabric.

This is the chart I used to determine the repeat. If this is not correct, please let me know.

Patterned Fabric Additional Yardage Estimation Chart
Fabric Plain Repeat Repeat Repeat Repeat Repeat Repeat
Width Fabric 3" - 14" 15"-19" 20"-27" 28"-36" 37"-45" 46"-54"
54" 0% 10% 15% 20% 25% 30% 35%
50"-52" 10% 20% 25% 30% 35% 40% 45%

First add the fabric's vertical and horizontal repeats together (for example, a 7' vertical repeat plus its 10' horizontal repeat gives a 17' total). Then find the appropriate column on the chart, and increase the yardage estimate by the percentage indicated.

For example: The yardage estimate is 5 yards of 54' wide fabric to cover a chair and the pattern on the fabric repeats horizontally every 10' and vertically every 7'. Add up the repeats (10' + 7' = 17') and find the appropriate column (15% for this example). 15 percent more fabric is needed to cover the chair while matching the pattern at the seams. 5 yards plus an extra 15 % is 5.75 yards.

I can't get the chart to come out correctly even though I have worked and worked on it. In the very first row of numbers, the first 0% should be under the Plain Fabric and the very last 35% in the first row should be under the Repeat 46" - 54". In the second row of numbers the 10% is correctly shown under Plain Fabric and the end 45% should be under the Repeat 46" - 54". Hope this makes sense.

(My head is spinning from trying to get this to come out. Just looked over to see if the battery is charged yet - it is not.)

RE: More Info

I just noticed that the repeat of my fabric did not show up. This is what the repeat is: 13.25" V., 27.5" H. So following the instructions above is how I came up with the 40.75" repeat. As previously stated, if this is not the correct way to calculate, please let me know.

RE: CL Purchase and Question

Generally the pattern starts in the middle of the fabric. So you buy one more run(whole pattern) of the fabric in case you need it for each chair. So if the length of the pattern is 27.5", buy one extra piece(27.5") for each chair. I find this works.

Then 1/2yd for contrasting piping, each chair.

I just made 2 wingback slipcovers with a 16" repeat. Took 5.5yds for each chair, including the matching piping and I had lots of long narrow scraps left over! Could have piped another 30yds! As long as you don't make a mistake and have to recut a piece you'll be fine.

Here's a picture of my chair with the fabric draped over it.That parrot tulip goes in the center of the back. See the finished product.

RE: More is better!

P.S. I should have added that more is better. If you can buy an extra 3 runs per chair....you can afford it...then by all means. In my case the store had the fabric on sale for $2 a yard and they only had 11yds left. I did miscut a piece twice! Lucky for me it was an inside panel for the wing, a little piece, I had plenty to make it right.

Thank you all so much for your comments and suggestions. Did not have time to post a picture yesterday, but am doing so now. There are two chairs like this and an ottoman. I plan to paint the blond wood an off-white eggshell (this chair has a leg that needs to be repaired, the other one does not).
