RANT: How did I use so much paint?

Posted by rjinga (My Page) on

I just recently painted my LR. I purchased 5 gallons of paint and used 4 gallons and did 2 coats. I had one gallon left and then completed my SMALL hallway, and used nearly a full gallon of paint. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE???

The LR walls are like 12 or 15 feet, two alls are 17 ft long, then I painted the FP wall and the front door entry wall.

The hallway is 12 feet of walls total and they are normal height. I just dont get how it took so much comparitively.

Hmmm, that is strange!

Could the paint have settled in the bucket? The top could have been thinner. The hall paint was maybe thicker so it took more?

well it was a brand new can...and I shook it up and stirred it well. It was all made/mixed at the same time, of course I did finish the other painting a few weeks ago. (so quicker after it came from Lowe's than this last gallon) So it's really strange. I figured that the overall area that the LR encompased is approximately 650 feet of wall space and the hallway was 100.

You probably just rolled out the larger area a little thinner.

We tend to take the most time with the smallest spaces.

Was the wall primed? How old was the existing wall finish? How much of a color change?

It takes what it takes.

Usually, my painting jobs take less paint than I figure....I prime the wall, use really good paint and the right size roller nap. But my 7'wide by 14' long entry, including the ceiling, took a little more than one gallon. That surprised me a bit. However....

It takes what it takes.
