What would you do?

We're hosting Thanksgiving this year and I get to repaint/remove wallpaper in the dining room and living room. It's a long rectangle divided in half and doesn't get a lot of light. Unfortunantly, I have dark wooden furniture and red upholstered couch and chairs. If you could come into my home and redecorate - what would you do?

I happen to like the richness of your dark wood furniture, red pieces and rug. Those are positives in my opinion, not negatives.

I would go with a rich gold/camel color for the walls. maybe Benjamin Moore Cork or Bryant Gold. If the room is dark, nothing you do will bring more light into it.

So, go for drama...like you made the rooms darker and intimate on purpose. I happen to like gold and red combos and have used those colors throughout our home.

Thank you Monablair!

Ditto Mona on the gold paint...
Do you like that idea?

Remove or shorten your valances would help to open up more light. Mirrors can be your friend.

I do really like the idea of the gold paint! :) I ran out and got the sample chips today and am going to try to narrow down the selection. Any advice on how to pick the right one, pictures, or color suggestions welcome!

I like the idea of removing the valances also. Thanks!

I'd suggest painting large posterboards with the colors and moving them around during the day to see how light makes the colors change in the room. I think you'll be able to tell which one will work better. Maybe neither one will work, but this is a good way to try the colors out without a lot of work and $$$ involved.

Have you looked at the golds in the Gallery?

You have a beautiful house, and I love your rug and furniture.
I agree with above-- gold would look great. Removing the valances will look more updated. The only other thing I would suggest is putting up larger artwork or mirrors instead of grouping small items.

What would I do.........Panic! You're going to strip and paint before Thanksgiving!?

I suggest testing an area to see just how easily the wallpaper is going to come off before diving in and tackling the project.

Sorry, I know I'm not much help but I just had to say what popped in my mind. : )

Yes to all the comments so far! As said, if a room doesn't get much light, at least you can add drama and warmth with a camel/gold tone.

That said? Remove the valances, let the drapes hang straight and also change the drapery rods so that the drapes are off the window...inside edge about halfway onto the trim. This will let a lot more light in!

I might try and rearrange the LR layout...appears a little tight there with the piano/sofa etc. More pix of that room?
