How do they create those paint sample pallets?

I don't know what you call them. But you know how on some paint websites if you pick a color to look at, they will sometimes pop up a whole pallet of of colors (normally one lighter and one darker) that complement your color choice?

So how are the secondary colors picked? Is there a formula?

Reason I am asking: I think I am back to painting my living room BM Spanish Olive (I know I know, I have been back and forth on that a million times) Anyway, my kitchen open right into the living room, and I was trying to think of what colors I could paint the kitchen that would be a nice complement to the SO.
