Hi everyone
Looking at buying this couch and chair for $650. I love the color but don't know much of the fabric. I have 4 kids and 2 cats...is microfibre a lint catcher? Will I be cleaning this every day?

THanks

Haley, I know a lot of people really like this fabric. My daughter has a big sectional sofa in a pretty tuscan blonde color and it's beautiful to look at, but I (we) hate to sit on it. Not only does all the hair from their cats stick to it, but so do our clothes. I've found it to be especially true with cottons I wear and t-shirt material. If you move at all after sitting down your clothes get all scrutched up. Just thought I'd throw that out there because most people don't think about that.

I also was looking at a microfibre couch on CL and this is what I learned:

1. Microfibre really just means that the fibres are smaller, so microfibre is really just a polyester. Polyester is a great choice for a busy household, cleans up well.

2. Like the microfibre cleaning cloths, YES, things will stick to it. BUT if you don't have pets, you may be OK.

3. In an earlier post, someone mentioned that the fabric will hold "butt prints"...might want to test that.

4. Other advice I got was to do a "smell test"...apparently they had bought a couch on CL and it had a curry smell that took some time to get rid of.

Hope that helps! I think $650 is a lot for a used set, I would check out buying new before I spent that much on a used set.

hummmmmmm well I do have 2 cats one of which is white/grey.
I was someone justifying the price as from what I understand Ashley Furniture is a good store...maybe I was wrong and it is too much. They had it listed originally at $700 and I got them down the 50 to $650 but I think they are pretty firm at that price. :(

It looks fairly new and would seem they are trying to recoup a good bit of their expenditure on it. I'd ask why they are selling it. Maybe they're not so happy with it for some reason. You might want to ask in person so you can see their response. Also check for signs of pets when you're there.

Thanks Squirrel, Fillagirl and Lukkiirish I have decided to not buy it ...I do have some worries that you all confirmed for me and those worries with the higher price make be back away. If is was rather inexpensive I would just buy it and take my chances with the fabric and if it didn't work out I would only of gambled a bit of money but a $650 gamble I am not prepared to do...$400-$500 maybe.

Thanks for your support!!

good decision haley, one I'm sure you wont regret. I have been furniture shopping lately (EVERYWHERE, online, in local stores etc) and I'm really quite surprised with the reasonable prices for good quality (not high end of course) but stuff like these, from ASHLEY and many other reputible furniture makers, for under $1000 a set. Go search on Ashley's site, they have all kinds of great sales all the time.

Glad you changed your mind because you could get that set new from Ashley for about the same amount of money.

I have microfiber and don't see it as a lint catcher. I have a dog and he doesn't go on the furniture but rubs against it and the hair doesn't really stick to it except for one corner I sometimes find hair. I just take a damp paper towel or microfiber cloth and wipe it off.

I was going to post about my experience with microfiber furniture, but I guess I'm late to the party :o) On the quality of Ashley furniture, I will comment. Please look elsewhere if it's upholstered furniture that will be used (and abused with kids & pets). Ashley's upholstered furniture is not made well and is what is considered lower end or "throw away" furniture (looks good out of the gate, but starts to go downhill fast). Their hard goods are better, like their wooden or mixed medium tables and chairs. If you can't spend more $$$, then continue to look for a better quality brand on CL. I'm certain something will come along. I've seen good quality upholstered furniture for the same price you would have spent on Ashley.

Thanks DD - well that shows me that if it at any degree grab my cats hair gets on it it is easy to clean with just a wipe down. As I look around it seems like such a HUGE majority of the sets I am seeing are microfibre.

Mrsmarv - well..I never knew that about the quality with Ashley. I have never actually purchased their furniture but for some reason I saw it as being a really decent quality (not high end mind you but good). So this is good advice. My last couch I purchased I splurged bought new and bought a really good quality name and I was so pleased with the choice and swore I would never buy cheap again! as I always bought cheap and was replacing sofas every year or two.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm thrilled with my microfiber couch. Natuzzi. Bought it when Sears had their 25% off (the most expensive item) Boxing Day sale. Definitely worth lining up for. Granted, it took 4 mnths to get the couch in, bec I chose one that isn't in stock.
I chose a style that has pleats (can't think of the right word) on the seat portion, to hide swipe and bum marks. Pleats without buttons (buttons would be chewed off by pets, pulled off by kids). We have two young children, 2 cats and one dog. I chose a light camel colour for the couch and I am thrilled to report that I've been able to remove blue ball point pen marks (budding artists for children) with soap and water.

I have no grabbing at clothes, or lint/hair issues at all with our microfiber sofa even with two dogs. However, it is a little stiff and I still would rather have chenille or something softer. Given my family though, I just can't keep other fabrics as clean as the microfiber.

I agree with mrsmarv. Ashley sofas are low-end. They put a lot of look on the outside, but it's junk on the inside. The normal lifetime for an Ashley sofa is about 5 years before you will want another sofa.

Regarding microfibers -- there are hundreds of different microfibers ranging from very inexpensive to moderately expensive. Many of the microfiber fabrics will attract pet hair, but there are many others that don't. From what I can see in the picture I would guess that this furniture is the type that will be a lint catcher.

I just sold a $2000 Ashley leather/wood set (2.5 yo) for $1500. A couch and chaise lounge. Three people called about, all wanting to come see it and no one questioned the price. Nothing wrong with it. It was just too formal for our lifestyle. We replaced with an Ashley microfiber sectional and matching rocker/recliner and bought two end tables. Also bought the extended warranty. I LOVE my Ashley dining room table and find the quality to be great. Hope the couch holds up! I can, btw, tell that the couch isn't as great a quality as the dining table but I'm hoping it will last. It's just mostly DH and me and we're not on it every day. I was told the fabric was microfiber but I've never seen microfiber look like this. Looks like kinda like leather but doesn't feel like leather:
