Oh, my goodness, no! If your child runs his trike into it, it will chip just like any good painter's finish. Please understand that my reaction is because you are already "over budget." If you have a budget for the door and are asking the question, then I assume $657 means something to you.

I was wondering the same thing. We are getting a new entry door and the option to have it factory painted is $469. For $50 or whatever I can buy the good quality paint and do it myself. I'm not positive the finish is as hard but it is quite a savings if I do it myself.

If you do it yourself, you'll have a can of touch-up paint in the shed. If it's possible to do it nice and slow and properly in time to dry thoroughly before installation, it's worth doing yourself.

If you have your contractor do it, though, the savings might not be there.
