| Wow, beautiful room! Lots of people on this forum have had good luck with Overstock.com for rugs, so I'd look there. Are you going to be adding pattern anywhere else, like drapes? I think the room needs some pattern, either on the walls with the drapes or on the floor with a rug. If you use a pattern in your drapes you could also look at a bound sisal. They are not expensive and can be a stunning look. |

| I have seen in design magazines a lot of the long shag area rugs. Someone I know just went to a rug store and had them cut her one for an area rug. They do not even need to be bound. I think a cream and oatmeal color would be stunning. |

| Wow! Your living room is stunning so far. I think a rug with the colors you are already using would be beautiful. If you're looking for a darker rug, something along the lines of the link below might look great in there. |

Nanny2a ~ I love that rug in the link you provided! Scoutjr ~ How long is your sofa? I think the shag would be a good idea, too. Have you checked any rug stores? This "shag" has the colors you're working with but seems grossly overpriced to me. |

| Thanks all, I am really struggling with this. Do you think a Persian/Oriental style rug would look weird? Charliennj - I think the sofa is 84 inches |

I think an oriental rug can look great.

It could work,if it has your colors such as http://www.potterybarn.com/products/brandon-rug/?pkey=cpersian-style-rugs But it might be too busy. I like Nanny2a's rug. |

| Love your furniture! I have a more modern/contemporary style and furniture in our house, but all of our rugs are more traditional in style. But you'd probably want a more "modern" interpretation of a traditional rug like the Brandon from PB or the Asimi from Crate & Barrel. |

| I do think that an oriental would be difficult, because of the colors usually represented aren't flattering to your color palate right now. Pottery Barn, or Crate and Barrel might have something that would work with your colors. PB usually has some gorgeous rugs that I'm always leaning toward using. Everywhere else I've looked, the "traditional" orientals tend to diminish that great color combination you've got working in there. That's why I linked to the more contemporary rug from CSN, it was the only thing I saw that flattered your color choices. |

| I agree with nanna2a- I do not think your room style works with an oriental rug. I like nanna2a's rug or I still think an oatmeal/cream shag would look great. Can anyone PS a shag rug for us? I love your room. It is beautiful- I meant to mention that above! |

| The best advice I can give you from my own and recent personal experience is to look at the rug in person before you buy it, especially if it's a large rug. I ordered a hallway runner and a rug for my booknook that I fell in love with online, and while they are both good quality, the colors aren't as bold as they appeared online. I like them, but was kind of disappointed. We bought our large Persian rug in the store, and had I seen it online, I doubt if I would have liked it. If you're going to spend a $1000 on a rug, do it in person unless there are no rug stores near you. |

| I'd take a look at Pottery Barn. If you don't have a store, you can order samples. I'm just afraid that a rug that's too contemporary wouldn't work as well. The fireplace wall is traditional (and lovely), where the rest of the room reads more transitional. If you put down a modern rug, the two styles would be weighted too much on opposite sides of the room IYKWIM. Patterned WTs and sisal, like jjam suggested, would also work. |

| I'm afraid that the Brando rug is too intrusive for your room. I much prefer a muted oriental.

| The traditionals are tough, with such bold, contemporary chairs. This one reads nicely, imo:

| I'd love to see a large gold mirror over the fireplace or a large picture. Squirrel your the best! ....Jane |

| Hi Everyone!! Thank you so much for all of the suggestions. I guess my brain is still going towards an oriental-style rug. I saw this one at Pottery Barn (see link). What do you think? The room is not done, I need more occasional tables, lamps, and I am thinking of getting a large mirror above the mantel. Oh, and I need window treatments too...it's been a long process. Anyone, if anyone is still looking, take a look at the link and let me know your opinions! Thank you! SJR |

| Is that the rug sample on the ottoman? This isn't the rug itself, as there was only a corner to piece together for the general feel.

| Not sure if the blue in this rug is too bold? I think it's a beautiful pattern, though. |

RE: Need help choosing a rug (picture included)

| Ha, ha, squirrel, yes it is the sample on the ottoman!! I found one that has a bit more of the seafoam green in it as opposed to the blue, but could not find a picture of it. Thanks so much for the photoshopping...I can't do that so it's a big help. Ctlane- which one did you like? |
RE: Need help choosing a rug (picture included)

| Beautiful room. I would tend to go with a more muted rug. Your furniture is quite bold and you are still going to add more accessories so I think the rug needs to be a little quiet. |
RE: Need help choosing a rug (picture included)
| | |
| If the colors work as well as it looks in the picture, I love the Malika!!!! You should look at jjam's fireplace; I think the round mirror arrangement she has really updates the traditional "mirror over the fireplace" look. Have you considered switching the chairs and the sofa? I think chairs in front of windows look better than sofas, they let the windows "breath" a bit. |
RE: Need help choosing a rug (picture included)

| Thanks, Kiko. I did try that, the sofa looked like it was floating in front of the opposite wall, but maybe that is because I didn't have anything above it. Maybe I will post a picture of it that way. |
RE: Need help choosing a rug (picture included)

| The Malika is the one I like the best so far. Your furniture pieces are dark and the lighter color of rug looks great. |
Another rug

| Here is a picture of the Preston rug. The colors are a little closer to the ones in my furniture I think. This is not my living room in the picture, I found it on Craigslist as the Preston is not on PB's website any longer (I did see it in the store). |

RE: Need help choosing a rug (picture included)

| still like the idea of the shag, or i think its called 'friese' at home decorators you can get a larger one for under 500. they have a wonderful color that has a bit of a sheen to it in a pale taupe/oyster color.Otherwise if i HAVE TO CHOOSE, it will be 'nanny's rug' Am I missing something , or are you just that good with computer skills that you can superimpose a rug in your room lol |

| Scout Lovely room! Hmmm scrollinng looking @ rug samples above - I think bringing in other colors (reds, golds) does not work, it throws things off & makes the current palette fight the newly added color imo Some ideas but I can't really get a sense w/o having it photoshopped into the existing room http://www.garnethill.com/jump.jsp?itemID=19862&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C5%2C7355%2C9909&iProductID=19862 http://www.garnethill.com/jump.jsp?itemID=17898&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C5%2C7355%2C9909&iProductID=17898 http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Tempo_Area_Rug/310/ http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Brighton_Area_Rug/680/ http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Menton_Area_Rug/910/ http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Interlude_Area_Rug/610/ http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Batya_Area_Rug/910/ This one looks like it has the most promise thus far http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Seaside_I_Area_Rug/310/ http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Bruckner_Area_Rug/420/ http://www.homedecorators.com/P/LeBlanc_Area_Rug/820/ I think a lighter rug would be better suited in this area - Already have lots of heavy dark pieces Window treatments and some artwork will help pull it all together Good luck |
