Decor shows worth watching

We all seem to lament the loss of quality decorating shows. So I ask, are there any good ones left?

Post your favorites and the networks they are on. Day and time if known.

I have none to offer but hope there are a few still out there.

I like Sarah Richardson, but don't see her lately. Candace Olson would be my next favorite. It seems most have gotten pretty awful lately and I don't watch often anymore.

I was going to say Genevieve Gorder's show, but it isn't on anymore. She has a new one coming about renovating her apartment in New York. I just like HER, I think. She isn't married to one style and I've watched her evolve since Trading Spaces.

In trying to figure out her old show's name, I came across an interview and she's in a relationship with Anthony Carrino of Kitchen Cousins. That is one ridiculously attractive couple! She's charming in the interview. If anyone is interested, I linked to it below.

I'll still watch Candace Olson's show when I catch it. Or Sarah Richardson. The rooms are often a little too polished for my taste, but pretty. Sabrina Soto's High/Low Project before it became a Target commercial. HHI because of the scenery and the quick look into how others in the world live - I tune out the silly comments. Property Virgins, also because I like looking at houses and I like the hosts. I peruse our local real estate listings all the time for fun. I have no intention of moving :D

I so miss the good quality shows that HGTV used to run! These days they should change the name from HGTV to "Buy a House/Sell a House", as that is, sadly, where their let's-do-it-on-the-cheap mindset seems to be.

I do like "Property Brothers" and "Income Property". I do acknowledge that both shows , like so many others these days on HGTV, buy into the same generic gray, tan design palate but (1) the hosts are nice guys that are also talented and knowledgeable; (2) their design solutions are practical and usually very good, and many times, inspiring; and (3) most of their clients come across as nice people you want to root for . . . unlike the hosts and most of the clients on "Love It or List It".

I like Rehab Addict. It's not a decorating show, per se, but it's a "house" show. Nicole Curtis seems to be the real deal and really does love those old houses. I just want her to put some poly on those raw stained floors!

I also echo those who like Sarah Richardson's, Candace Olsen's, and Genevieve Gorders' shows. I think the underlying theme there is that those shows involve actual old-school decorating for the people who are going to live in the house and aren't tied to some unrealistic time frame, budget, DIY component or flip/sale goal.

I'll be watching this thread with interest because I don't know of any current decorating shows.

The newest Sarah Richardson show, Real Potential, which just finished its run in Canada has almost nothing to do with design, but spends most of the 22 minutes showing three houses and having the home buyers pick one. Since we know all of the home buyers were already in escrow when they applied to be on the show, the process is staged and thus, not that interesting.

I like Rehab Addict but it doesn't seem as much about decorating as remodeling. But I like that about it.

I really liked Lynette Jennings was that she explained WHY things worked together. For someone who can't see the forest for the trees in decorating, like me, that helped a lot.

There was another show in that era, a guy who decorated his set house one room at a time throughout the season. He talked about tchotchkes a lot. and built simple furniture like benches and ottomans.

I know a lot of people here like Sarah R. but I find her very snobby. I feel the same about G. Gorder. Candice I like but many of her rooms look the same.

I do really like rehab addict because it is based in reality.

I do find that once I see a designer do a bad kitchen design it lowers my opinion about them. You know where the kitchen if more pretty than functional.

Anytime I turn on hgtv its always house hunters, Love/list or property brothers. When I scroll through the guide I never see any decorating shows on other channels either.

I cant belive Sarah Richardson is basically doing just a HH show...what a waste of her talents! I also used to like Michael Payne..can't remember the name of his show. He seemed to listen to the client and usually came up with pleasing designs and good solutions to any problems.

I really don't watch HGTV like I used to....maybe we should all bombard HGTV with letters/emails and tell them we want REAL design shows back.

Unfortunately you only see the decor/finished project at the end--and it's not a design show, but I really like DIY's Million Dollar Contractor(Sunday evenings) for the house porn and quality reno/finishing at its best.

    About This Show

DIY Network's Million Dollar Contractor, hosted by "Contractor to the Stars" Stephen Fanuka, gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at some of the most amazing spaces and construction of Manhattan's high-end luxury homes. The series focuses on the details, the materials and the insane amount of money clients spend to allow Stephen to create million-dollar projects. Despite the hefty price tag, many of the same on-site issues and problems also occur in the homes of everyday people. Throughout the series, Stephen shares tips and tricks of the trade that first-time DIYers and home improvement aficionados will appreciate.

there used to be one (I can't remember the name) with Vern Yip and some other decorators and realtors evaluating the return value on renovations. Three homes, all with similar renovations, say $50K kitchen remodels. It was great because they talked about what worked, and what didn't, and the styles ran the gamut. I always liked it to hear Vern say that something wasn't his personal style, but that it was well done. I wonder if it didn't stay on long because it was hard to find people willing to put their often pricey renos up for professional criticism.

That was "Bang for Your Buck". They used different HGTV designers for the series. There was a lull when the bubble burst :) but I think they've filmed some for 2013.

I liked it because of the variety of styles and personal touches that were used in the homes.

Joanie, Michael Payne's show was "Designing for the Sexes".

    I watch too much TV.

Funny I should see this just now...I'm home alone this evening, a rare occurrence, so I decided to hunker down in front of the TV in my sweats. I started watching House Hunters Renovations and decided to look ahead on the TV guide to see if there were any other shows on HGTV that I might want to record over the weekend. Could not find a single one that sounded appealing to me!

I used to like Designing For The Sexes, and there was another show where three designers gave presentations to a homeowner and they picked one designer...what was that one called? And...I used to like Trading Spaces years ago.

I like Design Star but missed most of the last season.

House Hunters International is always interesting. I also like The Unsellables. The host of that show typically blows my mind with her transformations! There are few that aren't as good as the others but I always watch that show when I happen to catch it.

I used to watch Christopher Lowell but looking back I am not a fan as he uses so much stuff in his decorating. I guess its just about taste and I am pretty clean lined and simple.

It seems to be all about the host/hostess not the actual design!! I would agree. I enjoy Candice, Sarah and Bryan--don't know his last name. He seems to be HTV's "It" guy right now with two or three different shows running. Rehab addict is a must see. I also enjoy the Salvage Dawgs and the other refurbish shows..They ALL could use some NEW episodes. I have them memorized. I could really live with out the PC pushing. Either gay couples are 1000% more prevalent than the census people claim or HGTV has decided to take up their cause. I would like to see the people mentioned above do a REALITY show for the average soccer mom..realistic budgets, NEED vs DREAM re-dos etc. Entertainment is nice but why cant HGTV do a show that is actually helpful?

There are no decent home decor shows any more.

Do you think the many blogs out now and our forum are taking over what once was? With the blogs I can get so much more information on how transformations were done and what materials. Same here.

Their production schedule almost passes by what is today's interest. It could be old before we even see it.

Television as a whole has been sliding. The cost to produce may have a major factor to "good". My personal take is when the writer's strike occurred, we lost.

    Technicolor:

An excellent point about blogs -- and not co-incidentally the MAJOR sponsors like Home Depot and Lowes (just to name two of the many) are now sponsoring all sorts of projects (indoor and outdoor) on the blogs!

You would think that SOMEONE at the top of the programming department for HGTV would notice -- and create programs that feature those blog-run projects (which would thrill the sponsors and that means more advertising dollars)

EVEN if they considered doing seasonal specials (like their popular Halloween and Christmas) to feature those blog-run projects ....kitchens? bathrooms? outdoor spaces? organizing??

And MOST importantly -- let the bloggers show the WHOLE before-and-after process (with fun stories about trial and tribulation and tears) ....

After all -- Before-and-After features have always been popular in home décor mags and books .....

Designers Challenge was great because you saw 3 different designer's take on the same space. Yes, Christopher Lowell packed too much into a space for me too but he was a hoot to watch, especially when demonstrating faux techniques.

I've enjoyed Rehab Addict since it started because she appears to work so hard and respects the history of the homes on which she works. I think she's the real deal. I'd love to see more of her decor choices.

I used to enjoy Bang for Your Buck because it demonstrated that some design/remodel choices are made because the homeowners want to, and not necessarily for resale.

I like Sarah Richardson's style at times, but it's her assistant who makes the show. He's a hoot!

I'm not inclined to sit through a 30-minute decorating show that doesn't reflect my taste. I could simply google and find a few blogs or magazines that provide more ideas and inspiration that are relevant to me.

Wow - I LOVED Designer's Challenge! I had forgotten all about that show. It's so sad that HGTV took off so many of the best shows, it is fun reading this post though!

Yesterday there was a marathon of rehab addict on diy network. I had it on while I was reading. I realized I watch tv a lot while reading or folding laundry.

peony4, perhaps you are right that many are not willing to sit and watch an entire show. Maybe that is why they add so much drama to these shows, to get our attention? As I just said unless I am watching something very interesting or a movie I am usually doing something else while sort of watching.

You have all mentioned some old favorites that are missed.

Did anyone just watch a new show about selling your home in 24 hours? Buyers look for homes by knocking on doors and owners have 24 hours to decide if they would be willing to sell. It was great....fast paced, interesting, lovely homes. I don't know the name of it and it doesn't seem to be listed on the HGTV schedule for Sunday at 1:00 (EST).

  • joaniepoanie

Yes, I just watched...it is called Sold on the Spot. Interesting but pretty fake I think (like most of these shows)...perhaps with the exception of the people who immediately said no or slammed their doors.

Tea...I had mentioned before that the stations should take a deeper look at the bloggers.

Also, a repeat post, Nate B. has a new show on NBC, not yet released. Oprah sure has power to be.

"In March 2013, television journalists noted that Berkus began working on a primetime series with NBC, initially titled âÂÂRenovation NationâÂÂ.[14] In May 2013 it was reported that the title was changed to "American Dream Builders", and implied the change had something to do with the fact that Planet Green had previously aired a show of the same "Renovation Nation" name between 2008 and 2010.[15] Berkus is the host and one of the producers of the show where, according to NBC, "American top designers, builders, architects and landscapers go head-to-head each week, putting their talents to the test on extreme home renovations. They'll tackle spaces that are architecturally diverse, resulting in epic transformations with impeccable design."[16] Early descriptions report that the cross country competitions will be judged both by design experts and also by viewers, as the live finale includes audience evaluation to determine the winner.[17] NBC has initially ordered 10 episodes which will reportedly premiere mid-season 2013-14 on Sunday evenings.[18]"

Hopefully they won't mess too much with his wisdom and skills. But it sounds complex to me for a show.

Oh yes, of course it is time lapsed like all their other shows, but I liked the fact that it was fast paced and not much repeat. I cannot stand Love It or List It, or House Hunters, when the people look back and forth at each other while making their decisions, etc, THEN they break for a commercial and we get to watch that part all over again.

As an aside...did anyone catch Nate in this weeks Project Runway? I could be wrong, but It looks like he had a facelift or something done....more's the pity...he never has to do anything...such a cutie..inside and out!

Just caught the Bronson Pinchot Project - now that is something really different. He has some gorgeous salvage pieces and a good eye for how to use them. Not the most practical show but what the hey...it's entertaining if you're into beautiful old stuff.

Also really like Rehab Addict - she does wonderful work and gets her hands dirty. Again great if you're into beautiful old houses.

Very disappointed in Sarah Richardson's latest - boring, formulaic and she's starting to sound a bit shrill...maybe she realizes that she's trapped in a not very good show!

And what is it with these contractors who make all the design decisions? Do people really let their contractor choose their paint colours, flooring and furniture? No wonder the results are bland.

There. Now I feel better :-)

I've always enjoyed the Bronson Pinchot Project, too.

What's Sarah's new show called? I'd like to record it.

Genevieve and Anthohy, now there's a gorgeous couple. I've always enjoyed her from the beginning as she pitches right in and is nice to all the help. She's easy to like and, add to that, she's a 25 years accomplished violinist that has traveled the world performing. Obviously she throws herself in to her passions and, in my opinion, she's a winner. I wish she had a regular show.
