Has anyone ever done this to their sofa?

Posted by eclecticme (My Page) on

I want to paint a sofa and put it in my playroom. I have this sofa that I want to recover in white muslin. Then I want to paint it or have my 3yo paint it to look similar to the bottom photo. Has anyone done this? Do you have photos?

I attempted to get a distressed leather or distressed fabric look with paint on an upholstered chair. There have been photos here from time to time of a sofa done that way that is beautiful. (Was it Magnaverde? I think I originally saw it on the Trash to Treasure forum)

My results were poor. I think you would have better results because you are starting with tight cushions that are not thickly padded, and going for a graffiti look that emphasizes that it is paint, rather than tries to be leather or fabric. Also, the underlying texture of the fabric made the paint job look worse.

I remember finding instructions that called for using regular latex paint. I think you will be able to results even better than your inspiration photo. That is the perfect look to go for.

You might not even need to recover first; an underlying brocade texture, while not exactly like the photo, might make it funkier and more interesting. Maybe you should experiment a little before recovering in Muslin. On the other hand, you could paint the muslin while flat before it goes on the sofa -- that might make things easier.

If your going to recover it in muslin, at that point I'd just use fabric paint pens to decorate it. Or give your 3 yo the paint pens and supervise .. so the paint doesn't end up on the wood, walls, floor and all over them. ;)

I agree with zipdee use fabric pens. Those on the original look like permanent markers that bled a bit. If you are ok with that, then just permanent markers would work. But do not, I repeat do not let a 3 yrold get a hold of a permanent marker. don't ask how why I still remember this 20 years later.

Thats pretty funny copperbailey. Now I WILL want to know what happened :)

I think it looks like permanent marker on the sofa and fabric paint or fabric marker on the chair. The chair seems to have a little shimmer on it.

The website I found it on states that it is muslin and fabric paint.

Here's the thread with a lot of tips, Magnaverde included

Here is a link that might be useful: painting a sofa

Muslin is pretty thin and I would be concerned that it is not going to wear very well.

Why not just paint that sofa white and go from there? Not sure why the muslin would be needed??

Thanks so much! After reading the article, I think I will try painting the whole thing instead of recovering with muslin. I'm sure my husband will flip out when he sees the paint can! Well...I think the whole project will make him flip. If the painted sofa dosent work out then I will recover and go from there. I cant wait to get started!

eclecticme, I LOVE that sofa! Nevermind the children, I want one in MY playroom. I could see a sofa possibly covered in canvas, and properly gessoed with flat latex paint. (can gesso be a past tense?) Maybe tape off the wood trim, then have a party and give everyone a pot of acrylic paint and a brush. Neat idea, thank you for sharing.

You could cover it with heavier artist's canvas rather than muslin. You may be able to get the pieces out of painters dropcloths.

Whatever you use, make sure it's set well. Reading a tag on some jeans recently, it warned that the dye might rub off onto furnishings (hard to imagine that got through the design process! Think they were Gloria Vanderbilt jeans. At Costcos). Later was reading how someone had noted the dye from their jeans had rubbed off onto their furniture. So, I'd just make sure that whatever paints/dyes you're using isn't going to transfer onto clothing and then over to paint another piece ; )

Amen to Squirrel's advice..find some way to seal the fabric. I have to wear dress clothes (not cheap) 6 days a week. I mostly wear dark blue, brown or black. My light covered car seats are all stained on the edge where I slide in, from the dark fabric dyes. :^(
Eclecticme, I think your couch looks like a wonderful project!
