Painting help!! Final phase

I am almost at the end of a kitchen remodel. I had remodeled my kitchen in 2006 with light maple cabinets. Now we decided we want a more open look so took down walls between kitchen and dining room and are adding a cherry island. Changing countertops of cabinets and new island to a Caesarstone Quartz " gray white with silver and crystal in it. My furniture is 18th century cherry in living and dining room and I canâÂÂt afford to change it so thought the blend with cherry island will help. The floor in kitchen is being installed on Monday and then all floors in living room , dining room and hallway with kitchen will be stained light. I have light wood work throughout. My wing chairs are a light cinnamon color with darker imprints. My plan was to make the living room, dining room, large two story foyer all in BM Eggshell Cinnamon âÂÂn spice which goes with imprint in wing chairs and jabot drapes and touch of this color in blue couch and club chair. The contractor is saying this too dark color and I will not like it. He also is suggesting BM Matte paint. I had the Matte in foyer before and it showed when I had to wash it so that is why I am leaning toward eggshell. I was also going to make the kitchen which has a few places for paint one shade lighter in careless whispers " he says this is too close and I should go tow colors up to Love Story. Now I also have crown molding that needs to be painted and ceiling. What color white would you suggest for ceiling and should crown molding be same shade of white in semi-gloss or flat?? Then since there is about a foot of drop down between rooms as needed to put in a beam " is the underside of dropdown the lighter shade like the kitchen or darker like the living room and dining room?? We also installed new front door with two sidelights " should it be painted in a semi gloss inside to match the foyer in dark color or the lighter shade of swatch. Contractor is sying it should be latex not oil " what do you think? Also outside of door which I want in a dark green " should he use Impervex Latex high gloss or Ironclad Enamel for NJ winters? He wants latex.
The most difficult part of this remodel is blending old furniture with new kitchen. I hope it will look great when finished as I canâÂÂt ever go back to what it was. I tried to upload more than one photo but no luck in that - I know others have done it but not sure how to.

I don't know if you are posting from a PC or Mac, but if you are using a PC, you put in one link to a photo, then drop down a line or two, and post the next photo's link, and keep repeating that. You can also 'reply' to your own posts, and then put a photo in each of your replies.

I looked at your paint colors and have linked Cinnamon 'n Spice below. You're right in that Careless Whispers is just a lighter version.

Have you bought samples of each and tried them in your rooms? It's very inexpensive 'insurance' rather than committing to a color you see in a chart, without seeing it in your rooms.

I know that we can help you so much more if you are able to post more photos of all of the elements.

I live in Maine, and I have used Ben Moore latex on all my exterior trim and doors, and it has been fine. The last time the house was painted, the painter suggested California Paints 2010 paint, which is latex and it has also performed beautifully.

    my3dogs-
Thanks for advice - I did buy the samples and tried them but difficult to tell how it will look in such a large area of living, dining, and hallway. I thought I had decided but contractor is getting me very nervous! I still can't seem to figure out how to post more than one photo when I use the Image file upload but I can do the response to my own post with more photos. Hope you can help me. This is one of two chairs and the print design matches perfectly with Cinnamon n'spice.

Here is how it looks open at this phase. Cherry island will be installed and see not woo many kitchen walls but thought lighter color would offset the dark Cinnamon but not sure if I should go two up to Love Story.

Jabot drapes - photo is dark unfortunately- but same as wing chairs and stools under sofa table.
Hope you can help me with colors of paint for crown molding - semi gloss or flat?? ceiling, foyer, living & dining room and then the kitchen area.
Thanks so much - I am not sleeping over this.

    Hi, again,

Are those the current kitchen cabinets? Are they the light maple?
I have natural maple cabinets in my kitchen, and I'll be honest; I can't see the paint colors you have in mind with them.

Are you certain that you want to pick up colors in your upholstered furniture? In other words, you know that you'll have that furniture and the jabots for a good length of time?

I'd do semi-gloss trim and flat on the ceiling. I have Ben Moore egg-shell paint in my kitchen. I can see any trim in your room photos, other than the door frame. But you say that you have light wood work through-out. Is that stained light or painted light?

If you can take photos with better lighting and include more of the areas that you are doing, it'll help a lot. I like my trim and what little crown molding I have to match. All of my trim throughout out the house is a off-white.

By bumping this up, I hope we'll get some people with stained trim, if that is what you have, to weigh in.

Yes, those are the present light maple cabinets. I do think I will have my furniture for a long time so need to go with it in colors. I hope the paint will go with the cabinets. My thought is to use the lighter paint from color card in kitchen area near cabinets. The new island is going to be in dark cherry as that is what the wood is in LR and DR. I had gotten advice from one decorator who suggested I make the island cherry to blend with other rooms as often people use different wood for island. I went with that idea - hope it was a good decison. The woodwork is all natural stained along with the doors as in the picture. Only the crown molding is white to go with ceilings and I think I will make it semi-gloss. I can't seem to get any lighter pictures as the room is sort of dark due to no lamps now with workers here. I know most people are using white woodwork but we like the natural and just had it redone a few years ago.
    any help is appreciated.

Don't let your contractor talk you out of color. My not-entirely-limited experience with contractors is that they like white. Occasionally, they may be really daring and go beige, but they usually have to start to feel faint when they do it.

Cinnamon-n-spice is really not that dark, and it is a pretty color. Having said that, I agree that it may not be the best choice for your cabinets or your trim. I think it's going to bring out the yellow in the wood. Have you tried painting a large swatch of the C'n'S close to the trim? If it looks fine, go for it. Otherwise, maybe look for somethig with a little more yellow.

I would paint the underside of the dropdown to match the living room and dining room, not the kitchen.

If you had white trim, I would recommend painting the crown to match it. However, since your trim is natural wood, the crown should be painted the wall color, unless you have really high ceilings.

And for ceiling color, you can go with a very pale shade of your wall color, instead of standard "ceiling white."

thanks both for chiming in and please continue to help me - I have painted a large sample next to woodwork and do like the way it looks. The shade lighter was suppose to go in kitchen. I just didn't want to go with a different color in the kitchen since it is all open and not sure if it would look right with another color - what do you think? Can you suggest another color that would go with the light maple cabinets and not clash with cinnamon n'spice. I am open for suggestions. The ceilings in the foyer with crown molding are very high (12ft, I think) and the ones in LR and DR are 8 feet. I never thought of doing same color as walls as wanted it to pop since it is pretty crown molding - really not semi-gloss white?
Please continue to help me - I have till tomorrow to decide. Also, thanks for telling me that all contractors want white!

I think that because the colors are so close, one just a bit lighter, that it's fine to go with one in the kitchen and the other in the living/dining room. Have you tried the darker one with your island cherry?

I agree with Chibimimi on the crown color. If you have white or off-white trim, I'd certainly go with that color on the crown. But since it would be the only white, unless your ceiling would be, I'd go with the wall color.

BUT, (disclaimer) you're talking to a person who when I bought my 1937 cape in 1986, it had a variety of trim painted colors, and the master bedroom and 'den', now my office/sewing room, were stained. It took me years as I re-did each room, but I now have the same off-white trim color in every room, and much prefer it to the stained. If my trim was antique, with beautiful grain, I might have left it, but it was just newly applied trim in the bedroom and den, and had no redeeming qualities..

In the end, you should do what looks best to you! :-)

my3dogs - thanks for input - I am obsessing over this paint decision and not sleeping. Today I said to my husband maybe we should do a blue color such as Fresh Water (1675) in kitchen. I am worried about what you said about the careless whispers which is one shade lighter than Cinnamon'n spice might not look well with light maple cabinets as you suggested. Can I go a different color like a blue in the kitchen area - not many walls there? Any suggestions as to what goes well with light maple cabinets and the cinnamon'n spice as I think I am set on that decision?
I sort of like the natural wood trim and I can never change it as it is everywhere including wood banister going up steps. I know painted woodwork is in but I am OK with stained and it is in good shape.
thanks so much for taking time to help me.

I have Ben Moore fan decks and I held Fresh Water ip to my maple cabinets. I didn't care for it at all, to be honest, and combined with Careless Whispers, with it's pinkish tones, it looked like nursery colors.

Ben Moore recommends 1624 Wescott Navy and 1007 Beigewood with Careless Whispers. You have a small color selection available due to wanting to match/bend with your fabrics. If the navy is too dark, look at 1622 Mineral Alloy or 1623 Britannia Blue. Both have a blue gray tone that should go with your chair fabric.

I can't tell from the kitchen pic above how much wall space would be painted in the kitchen, or whether you have windows in it.

I do not have photos of my kitchen on this laptop, but the limited wall space in my kitchen is Crimson, which is a mis-nomer, as it's a rusty red. I looked at darker colors for your kitchen, and I liked 1201 Spiced Apple Cider, or 1202 Baked Terra Cotta. They take some of the pinkness out of the Careless Whispers. But I don't know how they'd go with your trim. There seems to be very little wall space in the kitchen, so a darker color wouldn't bother me as you have the light cabinets. I like the grey and darker blues suggested above, and feel they would be better with your trim than Fresh Water.

Forgot there is a window in the kitchen and many LED lights in ceiling. What do you think to go with the 1215 Cinnamon n'spice?? thanks, I value your opinion.

I would still use the colors I mentioned above as the two colors you chose are so close in color.

Below is a link to Cinnamon 'n Spice on the Ben Moore site and if you scroll down, you will see the colors they recommend to go with it. Good luck!
