We also have an open great room to kitchen with gorgeous views at back of house. Our great room alone is about the size you mentioned. No chandelier to distract, but did floor outlets for two lamps behind sofa. Two other lamps on furniture at walls. Four sconces, two on each side of room.

I also did not want pendants over island, so went with cans (as much as I hate them, you don't want to cut off a finger).

DR is at front of house w chandelier. Breakfast room next to kitchen at back if house w chandelier. Keep overhead lighting finishes consistent for a cohesive look. Don't have to be exact, just in the same family.

Show me an attractive pot rack over an island and I will show you a homeowner that doesn't cook.

Those last two pot racks are from Urban Archaeology and cost $10K+.

I always think if you hang the pot rack high enough to not be in site lines..it is TOO HIGH to be useful. Do people keep a stool near by so they can get what they need--or is it as Beverly suggests--they are only decor?

Currently the nice pot rack I have is more in the middle of the kitchen and the table is a bit off from that. The accessibility is nice but tall men predictably hit their head every time they move under it. Dumb placement but we had no other choice.

In the new build, I hadn't planned on using it. Mostly because like arcy said I would need a stool to access the items on it, especially those things on the upper rack.
