Too distracting for an open great room/DR/kitchen?

New construction - space is 16 feet wide by 40 feet long. Still plenty of time before electrician comes but I'd like to have a more firm plan before he gets there.

I have an open space and am unclear as to how I go about lighting so that the pieces work well together and aren't distracting from the gorgeous view I have through the kitchen windows.

I'm thinking maybe pendants over the kitchen island, the dining room is next needing a chandelier and the living room will have to have lighting and we have looked at can lights in ceiling where walkway is and floor lamps near the chairs for reading.

(I've also been toying with using my gorgeous stainless steel pot rack over the island but was concerned if that, in an open space, would be overwhelming.)
Thoughts welcome...

Here is a link that might be useful: chandelier
