How do I hide a fireplace insert?

Hi all,

Due to a remodeling project and code issues and my chimney being too short and...well, I need a gas insert for my 1950s fireplace. I'm not overly fond of the look of these things in older settings (although they function pretty nicely) so I'm looking for advice on how to sneak one in.

I don't want to change the look of the fireplace (or rip it out, as spouse, architect, GC, and everyone with common sense has suggested). I want to keep the extremely dated features like a scalloped brass hood spark guard curtain thingie. Is there any reason I can't just stick the insert behind that and close the curtain when not in use?

Any suggestions on where I might find the least obtrusive insert, one that isn't trying to look good but trying to blend in?

Thanks!
