You could stain the table a darker color.

Will you strip it to bare wood first? Or were you planning to just paint over what's there?

Photos please. Would you consider refinishing and using a different stain? The wood can be utterly transformed. I think I'd only consider painting when the wood is irredeemable.

Paint on the top of a table will not hold up unless it is a professional conversion varnish type paint. Even then I have not had much luck with purchased painted finishes.
Best to strip and stain the top, you can paint the rest.
Soy gel stripper is the bomb. Nontoxic and works great.

I painted the top of my round pine kitchen table, and it has held up beautifully! Lots of heavy duty use by messy grandchildren and DH and I, and no problems with the paint holding up. That was four years ago, and it still looks as good as the day I did it. I used regular latex satin finish paint, and applied it with a good brush.

I would paint it black too. Would probably use one of the new cabinet paints for extra durability. Sand lightly between coats.

Or Spray paint would give a nice smooth finish
