How about a black ceramic backsplash? Subway, 4x4 or 2x2. Just black, which lets the granite take the stage.

Thanks for the suggestion peony4. Black is what I wanted to do in glass. Just wondering if I'm setting myself up extra maintenance by using black. Pretty sure I would be :o Right now the Formica counter and backsplash is light beige. Above the 5" backsplash is a busy wallpaper. It hides a lot of splatters (g)

If not black then what about a matte grey? Maybe like this with the grout as close as possible to the tile color to eliminate as much pattern as possible?

I wonder if the matching backsplash would be more visually pleasing to me if it was capped at the top for a more finished look? Does anyone do that?

Thanks Olychick but gray wouldn't work with the paint colors we're leaning towards. Browns with golden undertones. He found some "Brilliant Metals" paint by Valspar today at Lowes. Molten Penny and Lustrous Amber. OMGoodness! We've just crossed over to a "Vegas Strip" bathroom look :( I'm thinking something along the lines of Valspar "Gleaming Tan" (shimmer free thank you)

I ran your granite through palettefx and here are the colors it found...maybe it will help you select tile.

I would love a gold/amber glass so I am sad your husband nixed it.
I would prefer a higher than 5" matching splash with a cap. I also think there are some interesting ways to use the matching granite and not be tied to standard 5"

I have that granite in my kitchen. I went with subway tiles "scabos" travertine. Hope that helps.

The matching granite BS in my powder room is 14" high very similar to Localeater's first picture.

I think it's all a matter of preference, but personally I find it much more "busy" to change materials and have several different tile sizes than it is to just have the same material. If you were tiling a whole wall behind the sink it would be different. But a short backsplash is a short backsplash and with a granite one you have one material. With granite and tile you have two materials, and with an accent, three materials. or at least three sizes of material.

So if you are worried about visual busyness tile is going to be more busy than just keeping it all the same thing.

I think the problems is solved. DH to the rescue again :) Since my complaint was that the backsplash looked unfinished, he said "so have them apply an edge (like an ogee edge) to the top edge/ledge. I"m also going to see how much higher they can make it with the remnant we bought for our countertop.

I also am not a big fan of the 4-5" backsplash made from the same material as the countertop... but I went with in the house we have just moved to--- I think it looks good when you butt the mirror frame to the top of the backsplash as sortof shown in localeater's 2nd pic down ( mine is shorter and less thick)... but the mirror frame on the top of the backsplash eliminates that thick, stubby look that a slab backsplash has...

Yes, it's my plan to sit the mirror frame on the backsplash. I agree, it helps the look of the short backsplash. Thanks

localeater, I owe you an apology. When my husband suggested that we could use the ogee edge for a finished look, I thought that was his own idea. Tonight, when the subject came up again I told him I did a Google image search for ogee edge backsplashes and found several pictures. He said "I know, I saw it when you showed me the GW pictures of the different backsplash ideas". I went back and looked and there it was! I didn't notice it before. So I'm sorry for not giving YOU the acknowledgement for the answer to my dilemma. Thank YOU!
