I was also looking at a duvet cover at S&L -beautiful. I like some of the things at Horchow and JRenee, but again, most are duvet covers.

I keep my down comforter in a duvet cover year round because I like how fluffy it looks on the bed. But in the summer I put a thin down blanket on the bed and just fold the comforter off the bed at night and sleep under the sheet and blanket. If it gets really cold at night in the winter, I use both.

A high quality down comforter can last a LONG time - I have been pleased with The Company Store - my king sized down comforter has to be ~10yrs old!

I can attest to Sferra's comfort and durability. I splurged on a Sferra sheet set a few years ago and I love them. I have since seen Sferra duvet covers and the like at discounted prices at Tuesday Morning if you have that store nearby, that is where I buy bedding now. If you want mail order you could try Pineconehill.com or garnethill.com. I haven't ordered from them but their bedding is beautiful.

Pottery Barn and Ralph Lauren bedding is usually readily available on eBay at a discount, but you can also find Sferra, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Dransfield & Ross and Pine Cone Hill sometimes.

I tend to use duvet covers because they store in a smaller space and I like to change out my bedding often. In the summer, I often use an empty duvet cover like a coverlet.

Gilt has bed linens pretty often. You have to register, but it's not much of an inconvenience.
