what would happen if you added a third piece of exactly the same dimensions to the right of the first two with the same spacing as the first two?

I agree with the others, centered over the sofa. Personally, I believe that those two pictures are too long for that sofa, a smaller grouping looks more pleasant to me. As far next to the sofa, blank spaces are as important as art in creating a cohesive look.

I like things centered. So, I would probably first try to center the couch along the wall and then center the pictures over that. The arm of the couch would be slightly behind your chair. But I think that its just feels more cozy then. :) And, then you have the opportunity to add an end table on the side next to the doorway.

Kitchenlover, thanks! I think I like the smaller ones better! And I think I have them hung too high, they look better lower. Now to go shopping for smaller pictures. So you would leave the space to the right blank?

Selcier, I have rearranged this room so many times and I am sure at one point the sofa was centered, but I can't remember why I didn't like it! I will probably move it tomorrow to try it again! The room is quite large, but with 3 doorways, an off-center fireplace, tv placement to consider, I can't quite come up with a layout I like.

The pictures should be over the sofa because they create a grouping with the sofa. If they were centered on the wall they would just looked randomly placed. And the reason that you like them placed lower is that it creates a more cohesive grouping with the sofa, which is more pleasing to the eye. I think that what would look nice would be two pictures about the same dimensions, but hung vertically. Obviously, you can't do that with the ones that you have.

A tall plant/tree in the corner would fill in that space nicely.
