Can maple hardwood be stained?

We have natural maple flooring in or kitchen, and we really like it. Presently, there is carpet or tile everywhere else. But in the future, we may want hardwood in other rooms instead of carpet. I just don't think I would want the natural color everywhere. I would like a more medium tone. Anyway, I think it would look best to have the same consistent color throughout. So I'm wondering if we stick with maple whether it could be stained. Our current maple hardwood is site finished. I thought I had read somewhere that maple isn't usually stained.

To complicate matters more, our current hardwood has some gaps due to a ventilation fan that ran after install and reduced humidity too much. Not sure I want to tear out and replace though because it's not bad.
