You're going to think I'm crazy but don't even bother with brackets. They are a PITA. I always just screw through the header into the top part of window trip. Makes less holes too!

Wider part flat against the upper sill. I agree with louislinus and install by screwing directly through the wood of the shade into the upper sill. That's if your window frames are wood...if they're not, that's another story.

None of the staples are to be visible. You do probably need those brackets. The eyes that guide the cords should point straight down.

If the brackets are like on my roman shades, use them. They might have been a PITA to install, I can't remember. However, I recently had to take the shade down for a little repair and it was so nice to easily unscrew three wing nuts to take it down, and then screw them back to put it up again. The shade is bamboo, and almost unwieldly wide, yet I was able to do it myself without DH's help.

We wound up using brackets, my husband was scared he might split the wood headrail if he drilled through it. Thanks for all your help!
