Rug Advice / Family Room Progress

I have fabric samples from two sofas which I've ordered and would like to start looking at rugs. I'd love some suggestions... who are your favorite designers and websites and where would you start looking?

Also - would you wait until the sofas arrived before making this choice?

Here's the room as it stands. Walls aren't painted yet. Ceilings are painted 25% of planned wall color.

I really dislike the sofa shown here, but it's what we are temporarily using.

The new sofas will be a pale, silvery blue with brown and taupe accent pillows and dark brown legs. (Two different styles of sofas, same fabric). Floor will be refinished and will look much lighter but will remain oak.

Here's a picture of the fabrics in natural light in the room. The middle color will be the main color.

Last, here's an inspiration picture from Houzz. I just love the colors in this room. I'd be replacing the black with dark browns.

I really like this rug. It looks from your inspiration picture that you are going towards transitional. Do you know what background color you want in the rug? The one I posted is very light and would never work in my house but I love it!

What a pretty room! I'll bet you're so excited.

I'd wait until the sofas arrive. You might decide, once the sofas are in the room, you need more pattern, you need a neutral, you need more color, etc. I'd wait until you see how the colors of the sofas work in the room. You can have a rug in your home within hours these days.

I can't wait to see it all come together.

I love your room (and your lighting!).

I like Jayson Home, Urban Outfitters, and Madeline Weinrib.

Thanks for the link Holly-Kay. With all the dog hair, I can't go that light :) I think you're right about the room direction (transitional); as you know, planned direction and actual may be entirely different! I rather like the rug colors shown in the inspiration picture.

One thing I'm mulling over is adding built in book cases, with cabinets on the bottom, on both sides of the window. The inspiration picture introduces green with the curtains; perhaps the bookcases could be that green? I'm showing blue here just because it looked better with the current sofa :)

deeinohio - Thanks and good point, I will wait to order the rug until the sofas arrive (early December, it feels so far away).

Thanks mtnrdredux - the Madeline Weinrib rugs are gorgeous (and priced accordingly).

Built ins would be beautiful there. I've always had to build in bookcases if they weren't already there. There are some really fabulous inspiration pics on Houzz for painted cabinet/bookcase built-ins. [Grey and a bit modern[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/city-mcdougald-residence-traditional-living-room-phvw-vp~1368838), [blue and very traditional[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/cherry-hills-transitional-living-room-denver-phvw-vp~572005) and a fabulous blue-green color that isn't a bookcase, but it's Miles Redd who does saturated color like no one else.

My favorite sources right now for rugs that won't completely break the bank are Safavieh and Jaipur

BTW, gorgeous view out your window!

I like the bookcase idea, it also visually extends the window.

Built in bookcases will look great there. It reminds me of Annie's beautiful sofa nook in her library.

There are many lovely Shaw Flooring rugs that are made in the USA and are really rather inexpensive and they have some really beautiful transitional and contemporary rugs along with traditional.

I would wait until both the sofas were in and the walls were painted. Then see the rug in the room...the light cast by the wall color can have a dramatic affect on how the rug looks.

Such a lovely room and window!

Here is a selection of moderately priced rugs from Overstock. Not quite sure about the actual blue color you need, so this is a range.

mlweaving_Marji - love the Houzz links to painted bookshelves cabinets, thanks! Love the blue and very traditional; I hadn't even thought about glass or wire fronts.

Glad everyone likes the idea of the book case, mtnrdredux, you're right, it really does extend the window.

Here's a google sketchup with some mocked up 15" deep built ins.

holly-kay - I've spent some time on Shaw before, thanks, will head back.

Beverly27 - good range of blues, thanks. I'm concerned about going with a large pattern - feel it might be dated as soon as it's purchased.

Here are the sofas and fabrics I selected (both are in the same silverly blue color) along with a rug I came across last night. Too matchy?

Anniedeighnaugh - Wall paint coat # two going on as soon as I hit 'submit message"... will post once dry!

The palette will look beautiful when you are done. I agree about waiting to see the rugs with the final sofas. I too am at that stage with the formal LR/DR, and am going for a transitional look. I've searched at many of the sites listed above, along with Home Decorators and the other big online site.

I also shopped physically at Macy's, the big chains and the carpet specialists to see rugs up close and figure out what we liked and what we didn't. I would also check out Surya and Momeni and don't rule out custom sized rugs -- Surya, Nourison, Fabrica, Stanton/Royal Dutch and others all do similar things. After looking at tons of rugs online, I ended up finding a rug at PB, of all places. They had a sale and ordering at the store saves shipping.

Hi Gooster, I will look into the ones you suggested, thanks. One of my upcoming projects, by the way, is the little 'room' you suggested I create by walling off part of the family room. I always think of it as 'your' room :) Plans are to have a stack of 15" drawers, and upper cabinets, which will hold among other things comforters and afghans close by for when one is chilly.

Thanks all - I'll post a new thread soliciting input on the built-ins in the next week or so.

Don't know if you saw it on another thread, but I have built ins surrounding my sofa and I added slides into the bookcase that can be pulled out to put drinks on as there is no room for end tables.

Perhaps that will work for you too...

oldbat2be: the pressure, the pressure! I hope the wall works out for you. I'll post some pics of the FR once people come pick up their spare pieces out of there (we are giving away a few things).

Seriously, though, going to a few shops is helpful to narrow down the material and weave/type of rug.

I think you need to go a little wilder! Your inspiration room is not nearly as muted as your moodboard ... look at them side by side. You need some zing! Hey, how about orange? (just kidding!)

    Nice job in Sketchup, btw.

PS Annie's peekaboo side tables are brilliant. Steal that idea!

Who makes the sofa with all the pillows on the back, the one on the right in your photo montage? Do they do a loveseat?

I agree that you want a bit more punch to your room. That last rug you posted is way too matchy and subdued.

Your colors are soft and lovely...kind of remind me of this Phoebe Howard room

But if you are going that soft, just be careful to add lots of different textures and patterns to keep it interesting.

Is this is a good design seeds for your palette?

AnnieDeighnaugh - that is a fantastic idea. If your other thread has construction details, could you possibly link to it? Thanks for the design seeds palette, these are fun and useful. In this case, I was able to eliminate two colors fairly quickly: the dark grey and tan. I like the silver in the Phoebe Howard room (I think the sofa fabric will give a similar effect), the white, but think I want more contrast than the light brown.

mlweaving_Marji - The sofas are by Hickory White (left) and Sherril Furniture (right). The Sherrill one model # is 2186 1/2. I don't remember if there's a loveseat in that model but there are many loveseats to select.

mtnrdredux - Keep after me please! I do want some zing in here. Orange built-ins?! I have the fun lights ... we wired for sconces over DH's sofa (not sure about what we're putting over mine yet, probably floor lamps) and also want something really nice and dark for contrast. TV (sigh) will help, perhaps the brown tile, or a combination of a dark reclaimed wood mantel and a great tile. Here's one I found on Filmore Clark recently:

I actually rather like the idea of the tile with a really dark brown mantel:

Thanks all for hanging in there with me. It makes it so much more fun!

    No construction details.

The stone fabricator just cut the marble slab to the size we wanted. The trim carpenter made wooden "rails" for the slab to slide in and out of and then added a block of wood as a stopper to prevent it from being pulled out too far, and then added the small knob in the front to pull it open. They work well, but they are heavy. If you wanted to have them made, I'm sure a fabricator has remnants around for you to choose from.

Hi there, just in case you are still looking for a rug, I may suggest contact Manchester of the East. They specialize in custom made rugs and you might be able to find something of your choice.
