| I myself have asked this question in the past, and it comes up a lot.
I came across this article today and I think it's an excellent overview. |
Here is a link that might be useful: rug sizing

| Interesting that Rule #8 is illustrated with a rug that is obviously too small! I prefer rugs that allow all furniture legs to sit on them. I suspect that may have to do with growing up in old houses in which both the rooms and the rugs were large and covered most of the floor space. Today, room-sized rugs are difficult to find unless you want to spend exorbitant amounts of money which I don't. Most of mine seem to follow the "front legs on" rule. I have a couple of antique Persians that I need to have cleaned. They have been in the garage for several years now and may not be worth the effort. |
|
| Oh Cyn, clean the Persians and put them in the house! No matter the size you will be able to find a spot for them. Since our LR is big, I have a large round Persian in the back of the room with only a "game" table & chairs sitting in the middle. I have a large rug in the front of the LR (sofa divides the room in half), and the only furniture sitting on this rug is the big, heavy coffee table. Because of the style of the coffee table, it works. The website gives good tips but I can't relate to any of the furniture which IMO, makes a big difference on rug placement. |

| I've been rug shopping this past few weeks, and moving old rugs around. Hard to decide what size rugs for bedrooms... I have found that some of my old rugs were smaller 6 x7, and that was a big mistake. Too small a rug in a room looks funny! |

| Yes Cyn, clean and use those rugs! I bet they're beautiful! Interesting article! I love the pic that coincides with #9! So gorgeous! All legs are on my living room rug, and in the dining room one can scootch back the chair and still be on the rug. In the living room just the front legs on the rug would be fine with me, but in the dining room, I don't want to be half on half off! That's not conducive to comfortable dining! |

| LOL, Cyn, you are right! Thanks for posting, mntnrdredux! I've bookmarked it. We are #4, no legs on rug, but I could do #1 front legs of sofa on only. Yay, our entrance runner seems to be "correct." The home office looks like it belongs in our house. We do not have a runner in our main hall to the BR's. |

| Oakley and stinky, yes, I know I should clean them, but that will be very expensive, I'm afraid. LOL, can't afford to buy equivalents and can't afford to clean these! Guess I should bite the bullet. Thanks for the encouragement. I don't think they are in great shape-my mother did not care for them they way my grandparents did! Still a couple may be okay. |
