need accessory ideas for top of armoire and other areas..

I am in need of some accessory ideas to put on top of my armoire - it will only be there til maybe xmas - we will be getting a flat screen (hopefully)

I have no clue what kinds of things to put up there.
Here is a pic of the armoire:

Also - any ideas of something to put on the hearth. Something tall I guess - I envision a tall vase with some kind of branch or something. But I have no idea what to look for.

Also any reasonably priced websites out there to look??

I have family coming this weekend and I am trying to make some headway with decorating. We put up a gallery frame (from red envelope) and I am going to look for end tables (we have nothing but 2 plant stands.. lol.. haven't found anything the right height.

Our couch arms are higher - so need a taller end table.

I am also looking for accessories to fil the leaning shelves we have. I like the reds/oranges and then blacks and browns. Any ideas?
Please help!

I think that armoire can hold its own but if you do something, make it large and bulky, not something small and insignificant, although a chamber size lamp might be very pretty there, perhaps in crystal or something oriental.

this is a great question as I always have a hard time accessorizing too. I don't have a pic handy, but on my armoire I have a silk fern in a round pottery vase, 2 round wicker baskets stacked on top of each other, a couple books with some white pillar candles on them, and a tallish wire birdcage.

I love the look of plants and wicker, so try going to TJ Maxx or some place like that to pick up some large wicker baskets and then stick a plant inside of it. Then maybe stack several books next to it with some tallish candlesticks? Patricia is definitely right though - bigger items make more of an impact. For your leaning shelves, how about some more wicker baskets in the same tone as the ones on your armoire to tie it all together? Good luck :)

Since you're going to get a new television, why not leave the entertainment center as is and instead find a stunning picture for over the fireplace?? I notice most of the room lacks color so you could pull out a color from the picture and get pillows for the couches in solids and prints that have the colors in the painting. Put a huge basket to the left of the fireplace with some magazines or dried flowers. Find a nice flat basket bowl for your coffee table and place river rocks in it to mimic the fireplace. Pier One imports has lots of these. Check out this site for some really good deals, I've purchased from them and been very very happy.

With the armoire floating like that, you don't need anything on top - you have the windows and window treatments that fill the view. I would leave it plain.

I think you need some larger pieces for the leaning shelves, rather than so many small, busy things. Add some books in several places, a couple of interesting pots or vases, maybe a couple of colorful candles on candleholders, a plant here and there.

Have a fun family visit. I am sure they will think your house is great!

Thanks so much for all your ideas.

yayagal - I was thinking the same thing about putting stuff on top of the armoire when I may be getting rid of it in a few months.

Les - I will definetely look into getting some bigger pieces. I will try to get over to TJ Maxx and check out that site. I will also be getting over to Target this week as well.

Bringing color into the room...
I have been trying to bring in some burgandy/rust tones. I want to replace the curtains and I think this will bring in some of that color as well. I also have some Goldish/rust candleholders from my wedding that are on the FP.

The problem with finding a pic for the FP is that it is REALLY long. The FP mantle is 8+ft long and the ceiling there is the low part of the vaulted ceiling.

I also think I want to get a rug for the space. Something with some color - but I don;t want it too dark? Any ideas?
Any other ideas?

Here is a shot of the other side of the room - I have some art above the long sofa now - its one of those gallery frames with the frames hanging from the bar -

But now I am in need of some help with end tables.

here is a pic of the other side:
(ignore the computer table on the one side. I also want to get a rectangular ottoman and there is some art ont he wall now)

The problem I am having with side tables is that the sofa arm is really tall. To the top of the arm is about 31" and on either side of the sofa is about 32" of space on either side.

I am thinking something on the darker side b/c of the desk and leaning shelves that are staying.

Bookshelf as table: 34"H and 32"W

Round side table - this is 30"H and 17" diameter.

Half Moon Table/Shelves: 32"H and 32"W

Round Table (could be painted - this is black)This is 27"H and 20"diameter

Any other suggestions...

Thanks, Ruth
