Keep away from heavy pieces. A metal/ brass bed takes up far less visual space than a tall, dark, or heavy or headboard...or choose a very low headboard. Don't add a footboard. Long, low dressers are better than horizontal chests. Choose pale shades for everything: walls, bedding, windows. Blending these light colors is enlarging. If you want curtains, choose white or off white, light, airy muslin, sheer cotton . Add shades in the same white if needed for privacy or blocking sunlight. If you love cozy, darker colors, blends them softly. For more storage than the dresser allows, look for a shallow antique type armoire, and paint it the same color as your walls to help it disappear.

My first thought is to explore closet systems, so that as much as possible can be stored in the closet. You could possibly eliminate one or more dressers from the room completely with the right closet storage system. That would free up some floor space.

What's your overall decorating style? Traditional, modern, transitional? It's a bit difficult to make suggestions when we don't know what you are looking for.

If you have a more modern style, you could check out Ikea. They have beds with built-in storage, and the Pax wardrobe system has all sorts of features that allow you to store just about anything.

I think the trick is to stay away from a matching set of furniture. Think about the pieces of furniture you really need and buy only those. Can you provide a photo of the room?

Built-in storage that is floor-to-ceiling, matching the wall color, if you have a budget for something like that.

For freestanding (ie will probably be more budget-friendly), I think that tall dressers offer more vertical storage for a small footprint. Again, having them be similar to the wall color can help them feel like they're not taking up as much space.
