I thought it would help if I added pics of the room. It is a mess right now because I haven't figured out the rooms and I am having the DR, MBR, and ensuite painted tomorrow so there are rolled rugs, mirrors, etc. in the GR. Try to ignore the mess. :)

To me they feel a little more formal that the relaxed leather. I'd try to find some that don't show legs. I could picture a couple of swivel or low slung chairs in that setting.

Thank you yayagal. I hadn't thought of the chairs as formal as I thought the caning made a piece less formal. Perhaps I am confusing chairs with cane accents with the more rattan like pieces which are very informal.

I was thinking I might paint the frames and use a patterned fabric but am not sure if that would make them more or less formal looking. I did want something a bit more square as the backs would be the divider between the great room and the eating area/dinette.

I had one of those chairs from my great grandmother's house. It is absolutely not formal. I did think it was incredibly (and surprisingly) comfortable. In fact, for many years, I used it at my desk because I could sit cross legged or pull my feet up on it and curl up with the keyboard as I worked (in younger, thinner, more agile days). I am not a tiny gal so know this chair isn't small (if it is the same size as mine). I think it would look lovely painted and recovered.. I wish I had kept mine but when the caning popped out (probably due to my antics in it), I let it go.

Thanks Funkyart. I am going to look at the chairs tonight. I will take a small measuring tape along to get the size right.

I also found a picture of the house layout and thought it might make the pictures make more sense.
