What type of mirror do you envision over my fireplace?

I don't usually advocate hanging a mirror over the mantel, but it looks like I'm about to do it! I prefer seeing artwork, but (1) just haven't found THE right thing, (2) I am trying to brighten up a relatively small, dark living room, and (3) I think the mirror will reflect the painting over the sofa, which I do love.

So I've been poking around and haven't quite found the mirror that makes me happy. The artwork that is there now is 24" x 36" and I'd like something a bit larger. The total space there is about 39 x 54. I have a couple of different metal finishes in the area -- black fireplace surround, and dark bronze-almost-black-but-really-brown sconces. Other lamps in the room match the metal of the wall sconces. Wood-wise, I also have a mix -- trim and mantel are mahogany, some furniture is dark oak, and I also have a lighter reclaimed-wood end table.

My initial thought was a metal framed mirror that has sort of a varied finish with both brownish and black tones. Nothing too ornate. This isn't a formal room. I plan to prop a couple of small (8x10, 5x7) framed photos on the mantel in front of the mirror, as well as probably a colorful vase.

So far I've looked online at the usual suspects: PB, RH, Overstock, Bellacor, Lamps Plus, Ballard, etc. Have also looked on Craigslist. I wouldn't mind something with a slightly Mission "flair" to it, but not a strictly Mission piece, if you know what I mean. We have two pieces of Stickley Mission furniture in this room, which was a hard decision for me because I am NOT a matchy-matchy sort. Adding a mirror that matches those two pieces might just push me over the edge. My style is fairly eclectic. In case you hadn't noticed; yeah, that's a rabbit mask from Venice hanging next to the TV.

Thoughts? Ideas? Places to look? Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of stores around here with great mirrors, so I may have to find something online.

I kinda like this mirror from PB but not sure it quite works with my mantel.

I think it is too much wood. Between the ceiling, floor, trim, mantle, and even the furniture, you have a lot of wood.

SO my vote is against.

You mean you vote against the PB mirror, or against any mirror?

I think that was my concern with any wood mirror, too, which is why I have been looking more at metal frames but haven't seen anything great yet.

I would do a thin, 1" or under, modern frame in something metallic, but wood, and prop it against the wall sans wooden houses. Franken Frames has beautiful wood frames and many that would look great (you add the mirror).
Whatever you choose, don't do more brown wood.

Sueb,

I can't put my finger on why, but something about the craftsman/mission vibe does not go with mirrors, imho. Mirrors, to me, work better in a room that is more feminine, more french, or more formal or all three. Maybe if you google mission fpl images, they would have mirror that works?

But I am almost thinking if you wanted reflection, id rather see an old window or stained glass window hanging there? Provided it's a tasteful one,
: )

I think a wood framed mirror would be ok provided that it's very plain. We saw a lot of neat mirrors at a local hotel liquidators for cheap.

Hint on hanging mirrors...always hang them from a wire from below the midway point so that the mirror tilts down and reflects the room...otherwise, they tilt up and reflect only the ceiling .

 o
RE: What type of mirror do you envision over my fireplace?

No, mirrors over the mantle were very much part of the craftsman look.....the signiture mirror over a fireplace...or a built in buffet was a frameless rose tinted mirror.
Are those sconces wired in? Or just candle sconces hung there as "something"?
Given the fact that there is no wood work as part of the fireplace....I would do a huge mirror with a very simple squared off oak frame....small frame...no more than 2 inches wide.

Would you consider an oval, turned on its side? I think something with some curves would be a nice compliment to your sconces, and a good balance for all the rectangles on the fireplace. Perhaps something like this?

This one rather intrigues me, again hung horizontally:

Linda, yes, they are hard wired sconces.

Les, I did consider an oval but I haven't seen one that has spoken to me! I'm just not sure if I'd like the way an oval would feel in that space.

I found a few mirrors online that I thought I liked, then sat in the room with printouts of them...nope, none of them were right. Still poking around online while I half watch TV and half listen to 10 teenagers downstairs!

Could you just reframe your picture with a more substantial frame? Maybe something very simple, but 3 or 4" wide, in a burnished gold leaf to match your rabbit?

 o
RE: What type of mirror do you envision over my fireplace?

Have you tried cutting and taping newspaper or brown paper into various sizes and shapes to get a sense of what would really appeal to you there?

As Chibimimi suggested, maybe the art just needs a more substantial frame? Or maybe instead of photos on the mantel, you should consider a grouping of framed art/photos, etc over the mantel. Nothing says it has to be just one large item.

Also wondered if you have considered an mahogany overmantel?

Check out anthropologie, they have some neat mirrors. Sorry, I'm too tired/lazy to link it!

Hmm, here's another direction I hadn't considered. The colors in this frame would work with the colors in my room...

The artwork is headed elsewhere.

I agree that something with a little curve might be nice. I love this mirror from wisteria. If I didn't already have something similar, I would Definately buy it. I love my peacock mirror. Adds a nice sparkle to a rustic space.

I think a big rectangular mirror is ideal.
It will lighten and brighten the space considerably.
"Big" is the operative word. Then it becomes a visual opening in the wall that enlarges the room, rather than something that is meant to be used to check your eyeliner...and therefore seems a little out of place.

I also think wood that's in the same tone as your trim is fine, so long as it is not too heavy - and the PB one is too heavy.

I wouldn't lean it against the wall, simply because then it will reflect the ceiling. If you put the screw eyes in the frame at the halfway point on the sides, and make the wire long enough to reach a pair of picture hooks placed about six inches in from where the sides of the frame will sit, and four or so inches from the top, the mirror will lean a little downward, and reflect the room instead.

 o
RE: What type of mirror do you envision over my fireplace?

How about a large rectangular mirror with a black wood or metal frame, to echo your pretty fireplace surround? Consider placing it directly on the mantel rather than hanging it, to break up the expanse of wood on the back wall.

I have a mirror that is Mission in style and I enjoy the style a lot.

RE: What type of mirror do you envision over my fireplace?

I keep coming back to the Alizah mirror at PB (the second one I linked to, not the first). I like the fact that it's "none of the above" in terms of wood finish or metal...and it will bring some additional color into the room. It's a couple inches larger than the painting I have there now. Best of all we have Amex points that I can use to get it for "free." Just wish I could see it in the store but it's online/catalog only. Worst case scenario, I'm pretty sure I can return it to the store if necessary.

I moved the little pottery buildings to another shelf this morning and parked a smaller mirror up there just to see what a mirror would "feel" like, and honestly it was almost shocking how it changed the room. I oughta know this by now but I was still surprised at the effect.

Even moving the houses elsewhere and instead, putting 3 simple items on the mantel this morning, made a nice difference. This fall I'm doing a lot of editing and simplifying around my house. I'm the queen of tchotchkes and I need to rein it in a bit.

I really appreciate everyone's input. Everyone here is so helpful in helping me to see my own house in a way that I'm sometimes unable to see it. In some ways it's a lot harder to decorate my own space than to work in someone else's home. Weird, isn't it?

 o
RE: What type of mirror do you envision over my fireplace?

I vote the the second PB mirror for the reasons you stated AND the fact that it speaks to you. It's very pretty and not what every other house (including mine) has. My daughter found one similar at Pier-1 a few years ago and it made her LR come alive and picked up her other colors.

 o
RE: What type of mirror do you envision over my fireplace?

I put a mirror over my fireplace, but don't like it. It had these real nice mounting brackets on each side which result in the mirror being exactly flush with the brick and all it reflects to those of us below is the ceiling. And I would rather not be reminded of my popcorn ceiling! : ) I think I would like it better if it hung from an adjustable wire but now I have two big screws in the brick! So now I am looking for a nice big picture with some light colors in it!

 o
RE: What type of mirror do you envision over my fireplace?

How about a huge rectangular frameless beveled edge mirror. My 1920s house has a few features that can be labeled craftsman. Over the mantel originally it had gas sconces and a huge beveled frameless mirror that went sconce to sconce and was about 3 feet tall. I wish I still had the mirror. It fit the space so well- but not in a show off way. But 30 years ago,I didn't like them and was absolutely positive that I wouldn't change my mind and sold the mirror to a neighbor for $25. sigh. the young are so stupid.

I think a mission style mirror would look great over your mantel.

RE: What type of mirror do you envision over my fireplace?

1st one is too heavy for your FP.

2nd one is so pretty, but I am afraid details will compete with the brick/mortar.

I like the one lionors posted-- the shape is great-- just need a different wood tone.

 o
RE: What type of mirror do you envision over my fireplace?

I have a very large 7' tall by 5' wide mirror over my fireplace and love it (16' foot ceiling). I bought it at Hobby Lobby and love their mirrors and their prices (with their weekly 40% coupon). I was frustrated cleaning it because it would streak and take a long time to just look acceptable because of the film from the fire. I tried some Awesome Carpet Cleaner in a red spray bottle (bought at a dollar store) and oh my the paper towels were black after that a simple windexing and the mirror shined like new with no streaking.

 o
RE: What type of mirror do you envision over my fireplace?

I don't know whether you are still looking or not, but you could go to Michaels or another framing place and look at their selection of custom frames and pick out the style and size you want. Then go to a glass place and have a mirror cut to fit the frame.

 o
RE: What type of mirror do you envision over my fireplace?

I see that this is an older discussion, but I'll chime in anyway.

The second mirror from Pottery Barn has a lot of potential. It's very attractive, and I like the fact that it's patterned - the pattern could work well with your rug. (Probably not so well with the items on the mantle, but that's an easy fix.)

Barring that mirror, I vote for a large one with a fairly narrow wood frame, and with the wood matching the trim and mantle color as closely as possible. I'm a fan of glitzy blingy stuff and ordinarily would vote for a gold-colored mirror, possibly an antiqued, burnished gold, but in your room, the gold would probably fight with the colors in the brick.
