sacrilegous? Make Drexel Declaration into sinkbase?

O.K., mcm purists and renegade DIYers...there's a Drexel Declaration 36" dresser I am considering to adapt into a sinkbase for our last remaining bath remodel (3/4 guest bath). We need a walnut MCM piece no more than 40" wide, about 20" deep, and over 30" high, as we were going to put risers and then some gorgeous granite on top of whatever piece we found. It will involve drilling a hole for plumbing and making some of the drawers shallower, which would ruin it for any other future use, but then again it's less than a piece of Ikea dreck (I don't like their bath line--they've really cheapened it) and the lines are just what we're looking for.

Would you do it? Or should I let it go to someone who will keep it intact and search for something else? I *do* love the particular walnut veneer slices they chose for the front. It's matched, gorgeous, and dynamic, and the top does have scratches on it, which wouldn't matter because of the granite, so if someone wanted it for itself s/he would have to refinish the top (done frequently w/mcm pieces as opposed to, say, 18th c.) anyway.

I'm a libra, so it goes without saying that all perspectives are gratefully accepted.

It was mass produced so I say if it fits the bill, go for it.

HA -- I was just clicking refresh on the question, saying to myself "come on palimpsest, are you on right now?"

And there you are. Making *perfect* sense, and not just because you gave me the answer I was hoping for : ) There are more of them around, so I'm not taking a studio woodworking piece and bastardizing it. Great logic. *thank you*!

I agree. Funny re: your second post Fly! Isn't it grand when things happen like that?

Go for it as it sounds perfect for your application, plus has the merit of re-using an existing item.

It's exactly what you are looking for you should use and enjoy it! Of course we will need to see pics of the finished product!

Thanks, you all! Hi to cyn & terri -- I'm not on all that much but it's great to see you and I appreciate your weighing in.

I'm tied now between this piece, which is very nice, and another one we saw today that's a little busier but less expensive, and 2" wider (which is good), and taller (which is also good). It's also teak, not walnut, but it's that gorgeous old golden/brown teak, not the orangey later teak. I've been looking for this size for a long time and now I have *two* to choose between.

It's great to hear that the vote is unanimous. I will post pics of this bath when it's done. Which won't be for months, but it *will* happen, gosh darn it--I can't keep putting off the granite fabricator much longer (he's been holding my remnant literally for years. He's a dear, dear man.)

I'll be posting the study and the pantry sooner than that, though. I'm in the process of refinishing a repurposed room divider (the half-height kind with the planter in it) made of quartersawn mahogany, with a full-width cabinet opening under it) and some kind of kitchen upper -- I'm actually re-*veneering* that one, with new quartersawn mahogany (please send energies for beginner's luck on that!) -- to match the Ikea Hallarum kitchen cabinets you can see in the same perspective, iykwim (there's a word for it but I'm blocking on it - may be the fumes...) So I'm excited about those but when the powder room cabinet(s) came up, I have temporarily switched to materials-acquisition mode to choose one of them.

fun2, eek -- I realize that I may have seemed to exclude you -- and I want you to know that I didn't mean that at all. It's very kind of you to reply and I agree with you about reusing an existing item. DH and I were talking yesterday about how even if we *could* buy all new cabinetry, etc., for our house, we probably wouldn't, because we actually love the idea that every element has a story and a past. It makes the house alive, iykwim, and I think you do : )

If you really love it and want to look at it every day, why not. It's not like it's a rare piece and you could never get another, especially if the top isn't in good condition.

My motto is- if it isn't a pristine true valuable antique, and if you own it- go for it. Whether it is painting, repurposing or whatever your lil heart desires. heck its only a piece of furniture.

I think pal gave the perfect, succinct answer. It's a mass-produced piece that doesn't have. Big collector vibe. if it works in your space, I say go for it.

I've got a Drexel Declaration china cabinet in my office, and the wood does have a really nice tone to it.
