Blind, shade, panel?

I'm looking for window treatment suggestions. A couple windows face south and need something to help control the light. Privacy isn't an issue nor do they have to be blackout. There isn't room really for an inside mount. Do you suggest a panel on either side or some type of blind or shade? Where should it be mounted...on window trim or above? The windows are approx. 36x72 tall with 8ft. ceilings. Some type of color or texture would be ideal. Maybe a cellular shade with a valance to hide it?
