IMO for funky, it needs a shade the color of the background of the rug especially if walls remain white. Could be trimmed in a different color from the rug. Or for really funky a print that works with the rug and upholstery.

Best to take it to a lamp shop and try various styles/sizes of shades but you might have to go custom for color. Or DIY and for really funky hot glue on some silk flowers to match the rug!!!

I did a messy enlargement of the shade. I would go slightly larger on the bottom because perfectly parallel drums look bigger on top due to an optical illusion, but generally these sorts of bases look better with a shade that is a bit bigger and straighter than you would do on many lamps.

Thanks pal, I really like that. Much better proportions. How about pompom trim. Or is that just too corny. Right era for the 1968 chairs and sofa she inherited. I guess when you have crushed velvet gold chairs you can't worry too much about maintaining good taste
