I'm not sure how well it would stand up to the weather, and if the glass is shaped at all, how you would apply it on a curve. I'd think etching the glass would be better and easier. Kits are available in craft stores and you just have to be careful as the etching is done with acid, so read the instructions carefully. But it is fairly easy to do...wear gloves and brush it on...

Would a glass chimney fit over the bulb, within the sconce? There are different sizes and shapes available. (Like the one below)

Or maybe remove the glass and spray with a frosting spray. Of course all you may need is a pretty light bulb.

Annie, that sounds scary, I wouldn't want to end up looking like Jack Nicholson. On the other hand, maybe it would ruin my utility sink, making a good excuse to remodel my laundry room? I'll go look at the kits and see if it's in my range of ability!

Maddielee, I didn't think off that! My kitchen chandelier has a frosted hurricane, though you can't even see it inside the painted glass. My existing sconces have clear hurricanes, and it is such a Pain to change the bulbs with them, but that's a function of the whole sconce design, not just the hurricane.

Not that scary....the acid comes as a thick cream and pretty much stays put. Here's a video of how to do it....

bpathome, I have window film on the outside of some windows, and the weather doesn't affect it at all. I can even wash it when it gets dirty.
