Fabulous iron railing & grasscloth combo in foyer

| Wow! I used to dislike those skimpy iron railings found in so many 60s tract homes (ours had one too, removed by PO for something worse). But doesn't this one look smashing with the grasscloth and marble steps?

I never liked them either, the marble does seem to make them more attractive looking. BUT. . . I just look at those steps and cringe at the thought of how much it would hurt if you slipped on them.

This looks great! I think I need to get some grasscloth, because we have those black railings and I don't care for them but haven't changed them out yet.

I love the black frames on the prints and how they're arranged.

Very Zen looking...cool and yet very calming. I like it. c

Love it and I wish I could see the rest of the pictures going up the stairs. Anybody have an idea of what they are?

I agree with mitchdesj . I believe it's the artwork that's makes this area so "smashing" looking. :)

That's interesting, mitch. To me, it's the combination of textures that's so appealing. The fun of this forum is seeing how different things speak to different people.

Sameboat: according to the designer's website they are "original water color prints of sub-marine life". Not to nit-pick but "original water colors" and "prints" are two different things. I'm sure what she means is that they are prints (copies) of water color paintings. There are some more pictures of this space on the website.

I found some similar prints at posters.com and art.com. So pretty!

| I have iron railings original to my 1923 house. I just removed the grasscloth wallcovering in the hallway and stairwell. I loved the combination of iron and grasscloth, but the grasscloth had really deteriorated and it needed to be replaced. No wonder. We unearthed a patched hole in the wall and found newspaper from 1960 stuffed in there. I almost used grasscloth again, but I thought I needed a change and, besides, I couldn't afford the very expensive grasscloth from Brunschwig & Fils that I loved. Here it is, in case you're interested:

Annes_arbor, that grasscloth is magnificent! I have a small wall in my dining room i would LOVE to put something like that on. How hard is it to apply? Could an "all thumbs" person do it successfully do you suppose?

Estreya, Glad you like it. I just looked for my sample so I could give you the name of the paper, but I can't find it. I don't think it would be any harder to hang than regular wallpaper, but that's only a conjecture. Perhaps someone on GW has experience with grasscloth. Anne

Newhomebuilder: I chose another paper, and it was installed the other week. After having spent a fortune on my kitchen remodel, I had to scale back on the budget for the hallway. Maybe someone on GW will buy and hang the grasscloth and I can live vicariously through them :)

I would love to have it!! That is a gorgeous paper....I want it in my den so badly but I have a problem about where it would stop & go into my 2 story entry and then from there where it would stop to go into my upstairs hall. I couldn't imagine the cost of papering my den, entry and upstairs hall BUT the sheetrock work is so BAD (those nails are popping ) it would be alot easier and neater than having them come coat all the sheetrock again & priming & painting. Do you think it would be grasscloth overkill for all those areas???? Annes arbor, do you remember a round about figure for that wallpaper? flinching now~ I have the iron railings, too. I love grasscloth - we had it growing up & alot of my relatives had it, too. They all used the same interior designer. But it just brings in such a great texture. Smiles:)

Hi Ruby, I feel terrible. I just looked again for some information about the wallpaper. I must have thrown out the sample or misplaced it. My decorator had written the price per roll on the back of it. I really don't remember the price. The only notes I have are from the wallpaper hanger who noted that the grasscloth was 36" wide. To save money, one idea I had was to buy plain grasscloth and stencil on the design that's on the one I posted. I didn't do that, bc, as I said earlier, I went with something completely different. Now that everyone loves the grasscloth, I'm trying not to second guess myself. :( Anne

The layout of grasscloth paper can be important because the seems are visible especially with some of the heavier grasses. The house I grew up in still has grasscloth in the master bedroom after 35 years, and it still looks great. (furniture, rugs and other textiles have come and gone) What kind of paintjob would last 35 years? You pay more for it at the beginning but it has a long lifecycle.

That's okay, Anne! I'm still in that "kicking the tires" stage. Our local wallpaper place is having a sale in July so I'll start there. Palimpsest - your right about the grasscloth lasting - none of my relatives have taken it down. My mom doesn't live in the same house anymore but the new owners painted over hers & it looks good. My house is a builder spec house = about as bland as white rice and me thinks it would add a little umph!! Smiles:)

"about as bland as white rice" LOL! Great phrase, scoobyruby. Mine's a 60s builder spec in a development of lookalike homes. I've been trying to add character to it for the last 13 years. With this latest round of improvements, finally can I walk through the house and think, "oh how nice that looks!" Off to get grasscloth samples for a good dark red for the DR.

I know, I have to clean my keyboard after Ttodd, Trailrunner, Newdawn, Allison (hers is new but custom), Zipdee and others (I know I'm forgetting many , sorry) with those wonderful old houses post pics!! I am glad you are happy with your house :) I really think more women should start building (sorry, guys) but if some details were added during the build it wouldn't add THAT much to the final cost & would be sooooo much easier while the subs were there anyways. Especially like placement of electrical sockets, light switches, thermostats - OMG!! Don't even get me started on windows, door placement, how the house sits on the lot or anything like that! If you find one on sale that is not the color you want - consider it, it does look really good painted. Red will be stunning, Awn03! Smiles:)
