more curb shopping...

| So I was driving down the road today , minding my own business ,when I see this little old guy trying to load the "curb find" into his little old truck bed. I stopped and asked if he needed help. He said yes he was going to the land fill...uh nope I don't THINK so...not with this !! I offered him $50 'cause he looked like he could really use it and because I know what these are going for locally as I have priced at least 4 of them and passed due to over pricing. Now I have to 'splain to my DH what in the world I am going to do with this. LOL. First is have it sandblasted and then....you know...I think it will look great PURPLE to go with the rest of the garden. What do you guys think ? c

| Oh man I am so, so jealous! My grandparents had one of these at their house and I just looved it (though you had to be careful on sunny days...). Yanno, one of thse would be just perfect for our home now. We get really high winds so a standard swing wouldn't work. |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| What a fun piece! I can see that purple, I bet it wont blow around in the wind either. That was really generous of you to pay him for it :) |
RE: more curb shopping...

| Oh, it's FABOO! You got a good deal and did a good deed all at once. Congratulations! |

| Another great find. Those sliders are really nice! I remember your purple chairs but not the entire area. You know what would look best, but maybe an aqua would be pretty; love it with the purple (I'm stuck on aqua like AJ : ) I'm so glad you paid him, and generously. I guess he didn't have a clue what some of his old stuff would mean to someone else. |

| You guys are always so supportive. If you could have seen his truck and the little overalls he had on. I wanted to bring him home. He reminded me of all the people I took care of for 13 years as a Home Health Nurse. I am thinking now that I read the comments on Zip's thread and see squirrel's suggestion of aqua... the purple is way to matchy matchy... I will take an updated pic of the whole area and we can choose a color. THANK YOU squirrel, pb,natal, mclarke and snagd. Oh and pbrisjar you are next to get one !! c |

Your a good person Caroline a lot of people would of just taken that off the poor guy's hands. In this time of need it is good to help out our fellow man. And it is a great piece, I vote for painting it Aqua. |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
Caroline, I'm sitting here with teary face thinking about your offering him money instead of just taking it off his hands. Bless you. Add me to the list of aqua lovers. It would look awesome with your purple too. |

| Maybe lime green to go with all that purple....???? :-) PS that really was very sweet of you to pay him for the glider you sweet thing you! |
RE: more curb shopping...

| Have you seen what those go for on eBay? I've been looking for one, but finally gave up due to the high prices. I wanted to use one in my sunroom. Looks like it is in great shape! Lucky you! |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| Caroline, what a little sweetheart you are! You'll get an extra gold star in your crown for that. :o) What a great find. It could be twins with Zipdee's. I need to get out more. lol! Only thing I've found lately is that the lawn mower gods still hate me. In my next life I'm going to have really good luck with lawn mowers. Okay, now did you answer my q about your last curside find? I've gotta go look for that thread. |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| You and Zipdee where so fortunte to get such wonderful pieces, I remember some from 40-50 yrs. ago....they just yell screened in porch. They are going to look wonderful freshly painted and lovely cushions. Lucky You !!!! |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| How deja vu. I almost hit the back button thinking I had read this thread before. I sure does look to be a relative to the ZipDee one. How nice of you to offer to help the gentleman loading, and then to buy it from him and keep it out of a landfill. It is going to look great. New ones like that made out of plastic are going $600-800. You got an original. Congrats. |

| Jane and justgotta...you are so kind. I am glad I saw him and had my check book ! Usually don't carry it...must have been a "meant to be" thing. megsy and cat_mom so aqua or lime green...Robin...you know me better LOL...not too sweet. lydia I haven't checked e-bay but I know what they are locally...fresh paint they are $300 or so. oceanna...I am sorry about the mower gods...appease them by buying the cheapest that Lowes sells. It has worked beautifully for us. We used to get good ones and then freak when they messed up so now we get cheap and get it tuned 1x a year and it is great. I did answer about the chair on the other thread :)...you gotta pay more attention LOL. susan and dilly...after I saw Zips I had to laugh...they are definitely 1st cousins! |
RE: more curb shopping...

| Lovely story! My inlaws had one too...enjoy! |
RE: more curb shopping...

| You're so lucky to have found one in good condition, and so very thoughtful to have given him money for something he was going to throw out. Those good deeds do not go unrewarded ;) I've seen old, rusty gliders go for as high as $250 on our local CL and the reconditioned gliders complete with the original two-tone paint selling for up to $800. Have fun with the painting! A friend of ours had it sandblasted and painted at a local body shop, not sure what she paid but she did say it was well worth it. |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| What a sweet thing to do! You made his day, I'm sure. We love our old glider. tina |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| My DH would think I have flipped had I came home with that glider, after paying $50 for it to boot! LOL That was very generous of you. :) Although not as big and sturdy, here is one listed on my local CL. It's from the same woman that I bought my bamboo shelving from. |

| Oh and pbrisjar you are next to get one !! Then ... can I be next? Love it! I want one toooooooooo!!! |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| Wow, Caroline .. totally cousins to the one I picked up. I love the design on yours and can't see what color you paint it. I thought I got a good deal on mine at $100, but your did awesome on yours. You see very rusty ones here going for $300 - $350 and totally refinished for $1000 - $1200 depending on the job done and the design on the glider. |
RE: more curb shopping...

| Jen : you are next in line...you and I are going to have VERY colorful crowded porches !! NHB: are you sure your DH and mine haven't talked in the last 24hrs ??!! He was so "you are crazy" when he saw it. This one is in great condition. Some rust showing thru but has very little paint on it. I have seen the kind in your link too . casa I wish I could do the 2 tone paint but I am afraid that is way beyond my abilities and our best local auto paint place won't do it as he is too busy with his regular work. So I will get the guy who sandblasts to do that and then it is up to me. Thanks for the suppport everybody !! c lorabee and tina thank you ! I think once DH sits in it and starts gliding he will be sold ! |

Thought I'd add this before and after picture I found while searching online for make overs. Your's is in such better shape. You are very lucky. This will give you an idea of what an aqua one will look like though....
 |
RE.: more curb shopping...
| | |
| Just looked at yours closer and I see where the paint is scraped off and there's aqua there! I bet that was the original color! Now you have to paint it aqua. ;^) |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| Oh WOW !! That is it !! You are right when I went out and looked there is the original paint and it is under only one other coat ...the creamy white. So it is going to be much easier to do. I can hardly wait till the holiday is over and the guys shop reopens...gotta get it up there to be sanded. THANK YOU for the pic !! c |
RE: more curb shopping...

| I wish we had curb shopping your find is wonderful!!! |
RE: more curb shopping...

| Hmmmmmmmm, trailrunner, where do you live??? I'd like do some curb shopping in your neighborhood! What a great find, and what a great lady you are to help the gentleman out, too! |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| I thought that might help. I can't wait to see it finished also. This is fun. I really want one now. I have an old oak one that was my folks, but this style takes me back to my Grammy B's little home with her metal glider at the shady side of the house. Wonder what happened to that one? |
RE: more curb shopping...

| Love the aqua idea! (with purple and green cushions of course!) Jan |

| rdsso: I have been here for 7 years...so I can't believe what I have probably missed before this forum opened my eyes !! My DH may take my computer away...truck too !! LOL. nanny...central Alabama...we have people who do nothing but drive around the student's apts when the semester is over and look for amazing stuff...I don't even bother cause it is so busy with "shoppers" . The kids throw out all kinds of new stuff when they are ready to move...sigh...Mom and Dad paid for it all too. just: can you post a pic of the wooden one ?? I would love to see. My paternal Grandmother had the whole set on her glass porch in Ohio in the 50's. It was old then. She had the most wonderful cushy chintz cushions on it and the 2 chairs. I used to sit there for hours. I think this will have to be similar. tea...find me some pretty chintz in those colors !!! |
RE: more curb shopping...

| TR, are you going to post another thread for color choosing? |
RE: more curb shopping...

RE: more curb shopping...

I don't have a photo of the one I have. I'm not using it right now since it needs painting. I know. I had a hard time convincing myself to paint it, but stain just wasn't holding up. It looks similar to this one as it it glides/swings using chains. It doesn't have the extra arm rests though.
 |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| Oh Jen I would go ahead since it is already in great condition. By the time I have mine stripped and then buy 100 cans of spray paint you will have the better deal for sure. Go one you KNOW you want to....:) Yes squirrel I am...as soon as it is stripped I will post pics in the garden w/ the plants and we will have a vote...so be ready ! pb you are next...fingers XXX oh just that is very cool. I would paint it a dark forest green ...of course it depends where you are going to put it. So how about a color contest for you too ??? Everyone needs diversions these days...c |
RE: more curb shopping...

| Hi trailrunner, you are such a sweet person to give the gentleman some money for the glider. It's going to look beautiful when your finished working on it. You and your DH will really enjoy it on your beautiful porch. Please post pictures of it when your done. |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| I see you did answer. :o) It's hard to pay attention when things go zipping around the corner to page 2 in as few as 3-4 hours around here! |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| thank you Norma. I have cleared out the back patio last night and moved the purple set to a new place in preparation for placing the glider. We'll see how it looks. Oceanna: you got that right ! Things move fast here these days. I had missed all the posts to the Morris chair 2 different times...I thought it was done ! Gotta keep awake :) |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| trail & justgota, those lawn chairs are fantastic! Yummm! |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| Trailrunner, I have thought some more about the CL glider, and I think I will pass. You know I wouldn't be able to live with it in its current white condition -- oh, no - it'd definitely have to be turned fire-engine red, or deep cobalt blue, or screaming yellow ... thus adding to the overall cost. I'll keep looking for a fixer-upper, I guess. |
RE: more curb shopping...
| | |
| I wondered about that after I said what I did about the color...I just knew that there was NO WAY that glider was not going to find itself a new brighter life. I think you are right to wait...you will have so much more fun with the transformation. c |

| Trailrunner, funny you mention a dark forest green because that's just what I started to paint it before we moved here and it got stuck on the patio under the deck. I should have hubby help me drag it into the garage so I can paint it and put it on the back deck. No color matching worries there. Green is my favorite color so one of our porches decks or patios needs to have some green. |
RE: more curb shopping...

| Jan you have been busy !! I think it will have to be Sunbrella fabric though. Will post the pics of the glider when it is stripped , next week, and then we gotta pick the body color...will have to wait on cushions I bet as money is going to get tight soon...one more trip to NYC at the end of July for me and DH...we gotta get a cheaper hobby :) just: I think it would be beautiful. The dark green we used is from BM and I am very happy with it. It is on the fences in the pergola thread. It is hard to find almost black greens. The spray paint from Rustoleum...Charleston Green is very dark. I love it and used it on all my metal furniture in the Spring. Please post again to show what you do with it. c |
