As a matter of personal preference, I'd go with hardwood in the bedrooms if your budget allows. It'll be easier than trying to match the carpet in the hallway. Plus I think the populace is trending toward hardwood throughout the house. I prefer it because its just easier to clean (I see all the dust under my bed and think, "Jeez! imagine if that were embedded in carpet!!)

Thanks for your reply; I'm wondering about the transition from the carpeted hall to hardwood in the bedrooms. Would it be a good idea to install hardwood in the hall as well, but leave the Great Room carpet?

I don't think the transition from hall carpeting to hardwood bedrooms will be bad at all. I actually like the look, and it used to be the way many houses were when wall-to-wall carpeting was considered a "luxury" and hardwoods were the norm. I think it might be a little more awkward to transition from great room carpeting to hall hardwoods (but that really depends upon the visual space and personal preference, I think).
