paint color problems

Let me start by saying I've been lurking gardenweb for a while and have been impressed with the level of knowledge and helpfulness in the forums. I have been in my home for over a year now and can't pick paint to save my life. I included a picture of my kitchen/great room area. Right now the cabinets are being painted linen white, countertops are dark stained walnut, and backsplach is creams/tan travertine tiles. The door/window is on the opposite wall and it faces west. The room is dark and dreary. I chose behrs Gobi desert for my base color for the rest of the room, but need a darker tan/brown for the tall wall and island. Everything I have tried looks muddy or purple. Any suggestions?

I love brown on walls and think it's a great choice. I think a bold color against white cabinetry is great.

Behr matches Gobi Desert with Oakwood Brown.

A gorgeous brown is Ben Moore Woodcliff Lake.

Ben Moore Clinton Brown looks beautiful next to Behr's Gobi Desert, better than does Woodcliff Lake.

Thank you for the suggestions! I just didn't want the whole house to be a single color. The house is now painted avocado, rust, and mustard and those are not my prefence. I wanted palladian blue, grey, and beige. Unfortunately all of the Grey/blues that I tried just turn ugly grey because of the shadows so I went warmer instead. Thanks again!
