Disguising edges of hand tufted rug

I am currently deciding between two rugs...one hand tufted and the other is hand knotted. I really do want a hand knotted rug because of the better quality, but I like the design of the hand tufted as well. However, there is one thing about the hand tufted that is a big turnoff...the rug is mostly dark colors but the backing is ivory. So you can see the backing on the edges of the rug... the contrast with the black and dark colors is very ugly.

Does anyone know of a way to disguise the edges? Can a good rug dealer apply a black tape around the outermost edge of the backing? The rug dealer suggested to dye the edge a bit to knock down the contrast but that seems shady to me.

You could take it to a rug shop and have the edges bound.....that's what we did with an oriental style carpet that had fringed ends. I dislike the fringe, as it gets twisted in our vacuum and the dogs always mess it up, making it look untidy. I took the carpet to a rug shop, the fringe was removed, leaving unattractive end edges. The carpet was rebound on both ends for less than $40 for 18'.

There are numerous reasons why you should opt for the Oriental rug over the hand tufted one, the link is below. Otherwise it is not uncommon to "doctor" an inexpensive rug with quick fixes such as markering or other.

That is exactly what I'm going to do, pharaoh. There is just no comparison in quality. Too bad so many great designs are hand-tufted. I've got a hand tufted rug on order right now and the place is really great to deal with...if I don't like it, they said they would just put it in stock and I wouldn't be obligated. I'm hoping the colors match my room.

I did ask the dealer if they could serge/bind the edges on the hand tufted one. It would cost $170 to hand serge the edges. That would have made it more expensive than the hand tufted one! No thanks!
